I'm not sure what I've got for my rc engine, I bought two nitro cars with out knowing they had bad compression. I know oober noob mistake, one is a HPI, the other is TC3. I couldn't get one to start due to bad compression, and the other had a broken gear for the electronic start. After swapping the smaller gear from the hpi to tc3 I still couldn't get it to start. But now I'm looking at looking getting a new piston and sleeve, I have no clue how to tell which engine type I have to get the correct ones. Both are 4 wheel drive. Can anyone help me out with this?

I know the one is a OS CR-V 18 at least thats what the top of the heat sink says....The other is the HPI that I don't know about...
 
I'm not 100% sure either as HPi makes two engines that look almost identical. One is a .18, the other is a .15.

Personally, if it's that abused (which it looks like it is), I'd toss it and get a new one. Piston/Sleeve+conrod is more than half the engine. New engine gets you new bearings, carb, starter... well worth the extra $30.

Heck, HPI may has an engine replacement program that could save you a few bucks as well. I'd go that route:

The OS 18 is a good little engine. If it's dead (no compression) then it's had the snot run out of it. Those little engines last many gallons when properly taken care of. I got 12 out of an old OS15CV-R back in the day. The guy I sold the truck to got a couple more before it gave him fits.

Hey thanx for the info ill be ordering a new engine this friday, will it
make a big difference if I just buy the 18 engine. And in your opinions just replace both engines? I need to order new screws for the engine to mount it to the frame, as well.

How do I know what engines will fit my frame if I wanted to go larger?

Your rigs are built for small blocks, so you more than likely are stuck with a small block. Typically .12ci - .18ci.

Considering both are on-road cars, you could probably benifit from a more expensive higher end .12. They crank out more RPM's and less torque. Easier to drive and faster.

Me being a basher, I'd stick with the HPI/OS 18's. Reliable, decent power, ok to tune. The OS is the better of the to IMO. The price also reflects that. ;)

engine = NOT electric

Thanx for the help Olds97_lss, and everyone else. I placed the engine on order. Only thing i need to do now, is just clean up and tare down the old engines for spare parts, minus the pistons and sleeves. More or less the blocks, heat sinks and carbs. I need to upgrade the receiver and remote. But I'm not sure which one to go for. the one I have is from Tower hobbies, but the turd muffin ripped the antenna out and now i have to put it back on. Thinking I'm better off with a new remote and servos, but this one actually still works pretty good.

In your opinions, should i keep the pull starter on the new HPI, or put the electric start off the old on. I just need a new dog bone for the starter.
 
Not super knowledgable on the TC3 (buddy had one I used to help him with), but I've broken in and tuned over a dozen RS4 Evos and that my friend is the .15 engine. You can tell by the two speed gears being purple anodized. The .18 came with red gears for higher top speed.

Technically HPI calls it their T-15 engine. It's not a bad little mill, but yours might not have been taken care of (no after run oil, not set at BDC after running, etc.).

FYI, HPI DOES have an engine exchange program. For small-blocks I believe it is $65. And you CAN trade in the .15 for their .18 (G-3.0)...

I'd fix and range test your current electronics to determine if they need replaced or not. Starters are really personal preference. Electric starters make starting a new mill a little easier though.
 
Do you know, if the HPI exchange would accept my engine with electric start gears, or would I beable to send it with out that on it???? I don't have the pull start..
 
Yeah I called HPI to ask them a few questions, but got there voice mail. To my surprise they called me back, I sent it out today after taking the one way nut, and starter gears off. I'm going to get the upgrade to .18
