I'm back and I am building a scaler. Not a reason to be put to death you say! Well it's a Toyota HiLux. Yeh. Another one. I know they are more common than the word 'shelf' in a post replying to Rolex, but I had to.

I am not doing things lightly. I'm 'scratch' building (it's not really scratch but it's sorta a kit-bash) it from an Axial powertrain, RC4WD axles and wheels, a chunky ladder chassis, a Tamiya HiLux cab with a replacement bulkhead and some materials I scraped together (various bits of Delrin, some plastic board, sheet of 2mm alluminium sheet). I have a lighting controller and various strings of coloured lights.

Areas I have sorted are the suspension (I think) and drivetrain so far. Biggest challenges are gonna be fabricating some body mountings, a front platework to support the recovery winch and front (Proline) bumper, and a flatbed back and cage. I'd also like a locker on the bed. Underneath I need a battery holder for a 3-cell triangular A123 pack and 2-cell flat A123 pack as well as mounts for the electrics.

I need some good advices on all that lot really, as I've never done anything scale before - I'm pretty practical and can make stuff up but need inspiration to do so. All advice welcome.

Oh and hi, by the way, it's been a while :)

Hey Webbage, it's good to see you post again and nice to know you haven't forgot about Rolex :hehe:

It sounds like you have a pretty good game plan, I'm going to keep an eye on this build!

Good luck with the build. Sure they have been done alot but aslong as you can put a good personal touch to it, then it will be original for sure, my toyota was easily one of my favorite scaler builds.

Here's some pictures of my progress so far. The Suspension is temporarily rigged for now - I think the ride looks a little high myself - see what yo think:

Looks good but I agree, too high for the tires imo.

The shocks are pretty soft, so it'll sit down a bit. I've got a ESC, 2 A123 batteries, the internal mountings and platework, a winch, a lighting set, 2 bumpers and a ton of wiring to go in yet so it's not at it's finished weight.

if I do want to shorten the shocks would the stnadard fuel tube inside the shock body work okay d'ya think, or would I actually need shorter shocks?

Biggest problem I've got with the travel in the suspension atm is the props aren't long enough to handle it, the rear one keeps dropping int half!!

I would either go with a shorter shock or try running a droop set up. When I ran RC4WD scale shocks they were a little longer than I wanted so I cut the internal springs at at about 70/30. I ran the 30% under the shock piston and the 70% over the piston, this lowered the ride hight and worked really well for a scale set up.
