Iv'e put around 4 gallons through my picco .26 max now. I stripped out the button head?, where the glow plug goes...so I took apart the engine and it seems to have some problems.
First, the starting shaft seems to be loose. I could easily slide a piece of paper into the opening. Should I replace the starting shaft or the back plate??

Second, there is a lot of play between the flywheel and piston. I can turn the flywheel that much without it moving the piston. Is this normal or does something need to be replaced?

Sounds like theres been alot of abuse and damage done to that picco. By the time you rebuild it properly you could just buy a new one off ebay. Thats even if the block itself isnt damaged and worth trying to rebuild.
 
Yea, its just strange because it still has strong compression and a solid pinch. Hows my piston look? There's a few scars on it but it doesn't seem to affect it...

My picco 28 has almost 11 gallons thru it, it used to be driven hard and put up wet, before I rebuilt it. If the motor has plenty of pinch left, then I would put new bearings, new conn rod and new back plate one and continue driving it. I rebuilt mine at the 4 gallon mark, my second picco was rebuilt and gallon 3 but thats because I did nothing but high speed passes with it lol
 
Like DM just said, it's normal wear on this type of engine and just needs normal maintenance. I did a quick calculation for .28 engines and found that they spin roughly 3,000,000 revolutions per gallon, the .26 would be more and at 4 gallons some of the parts do get a little worn out and need replacing.
 
Sooo I took the engine apart today and can't seem to find out specifically where all the slop is coming from but since it would cost $125+ (piston, sleeve, backplate, con-rod; new bearing $50)to repair it, Ill just run it too its death then get a new engine. Right now atleast the wear doesn't seem to really have an effect on it and it still has plenty of power!
 
It won't last long if there is that much play in it. Maybe buy a new engine and just put that piston (not rod) and sleeve in the new one, then your already done the break-in and your only using the parts that are supposed to be worn in with brand new internals.
 
Thats a good idea, and Ill have a back up new piston and sleeve then. Thanks man!
 
Before you make a decision, you don't need a new piston and sleeve when you do the rebuild, just the bearings and a new rod for internals, plus the back plate and shaft.
 
Well I figured Id just start fresh, and there seemed to be some play in the piston but maybe that could be fixed with just a new wrist pin? And there is some slight damage to the piston and sleeve, but its not very bad at all.
 
The play is almost always at the bottom bearing of the rod, I have never seen a picco with any wrist pin play, and you can't (feasibly) fix it if there was some. The choice is yours but now you can make an educated one :)
 
Yea! Thanks for all the help man!!! But I can kinda turn the the conrod on the wrist pin horizontally...I think ill just order a wrist pin too just cause there only $2.
