I just put this engine in my maxx WOW what a difference!! Performance ,cooler running, easier to start even with a pull start, and oh yeah did i mention more power?? Anyone else use this engine ? any insight?

MaxxRunner

i have the same motor in my maxx. stripped the tranny the first day after break in. now i have robinson racing gears, thanks to my wife.

I put the P2 .21 in my Maxx also. Power level is now crazy. Did you put on a good tuned pipe?

I just installed my new Picco .21 and at low throttle running it seems to have more power than the Sirio 18 I had on it. However I am still having trouble breaking the Picco .21 in.
I just went through so far 2 tank fulls just by running it on top of a wooden block in very low speeds which is less than half trigger throttle. I would very slowly pick up the speed and it would then shut off at pretty much half throttle or it would shut completely off if I snapped the throttle full quickly in and out. I am completely clueless of how to keep my new Picco .21 constantly running during break in and after break in period.
What should I have the high and low needle settings at for optimal break in which also won't shut it down when I snap the throttle? How many turns out from closed for both high and low?

Thanks
RJ

RJ, before I attempt to answer, I must ask, do you know how to tune an engine (even just a little)? I'm sure I am not the world's greatest engine tuner, but I do have all my vehicles running and making good power. I'll be glad to help if I can, as will many others here in this fine forum.

Well I tuned my Savage .25 just fine and that's only 2 weeks old so I do believe I know a "little" about what kind of sounds, shifting, idle to look out for. My Savage shifts fine, nice trail of smoke, low and high speeds with no sputter especially when shifting, and very clean take offs from dead stops with temps around 230 - 280 degrees.....so I think I did pretty good with tuning my Savage.
However, back to TMAXX and Picco .21, I am still new to tuning so any help tuning on this Picco .21 would be greatly appreciated.
1) Should it be shutting down after I snap the throttle quickly? I think not.
2) slow accleration increasing to higher speeds, shuts it down around half throttle. How do I solve this which I believe would solve the first issue?

By "snapping" the throttle, do you mean a quick pull from idle? If so, it sounds to me like your HS needle may be rich. What kind of temps are you letting it get up to? You might not have enough heat in the engine to burn all that fuel. I like to let it get up to at least 200 deg. by the end of the 1st tnk to let it heat cycle. Everyone has their own breakin process, just throwin' out some ideas.

RJ,

Here are needle settings that may help you:
HSN: 4.5 - 4.75 turns out.
LSN: 3.0 turns out.

These were for P2 that is broken in, so maybe go a tad richer if yer engine is still new.

If engine stills stalls, there are a number of things to look at/replace:

1) glow plug (replace)
2) weak fuel pressure (fuel tank not sealed possibly)
3) clogged fuel line/filter
4) air leak (my P2 stalled like crazy until I noticed that the carb cinch pin had fallen out)
5) one-way bearing seized

Hopefully, this helps. Lemme know.

What kind of signs if the one way bearing were seized....well for one, I believe if the one way bearing were seized, I wouldn't be able to use teh pull start to crank her over?..right?
But I did notice that when I snap the throttle "quick pull from idle"....it looked like the cord on the pull start would get sucked in. Could that cause it also to shut off if the cord would get tugged back in hard before it stalls?

If the cord is getting 'sucked' in, your one-way could be dragging enough to make it stall. It would definitely be worth checking out. I have one of these that I'm going to build a custom truck from the ground up with, I hope I don't run in to the same problem.

Hmmm???
New engine, new one way bearing, new pull start....I hate to kill em all.

by the way...what glow plug are you using in these Picco .21 engines?
When I do get it started and once I pull the ignitor off...it stalls. Bad glow plug or bad needle settings. I set the needles to what ya recommended 4.5 for high and 3 for low.

My one way bearing had seized, that's why I mention it. It was an issue with some of these engines.

Two things mostly cause stalling when ignitor removed:
1) bad glow plug
2) mixture too rich

I use all kinds of plugs, mostly OS8 and McCoy 59, but any new plug should get engine up and running.

Make sure your idle setting is OK. You should see a 1mm to 2mm gap when looking down carb throat with air filter off. Also, you sure fuel tank is sealing OK? All fuel lines new? It only takes a few air bubbles (caused by pinhole) in line to make engine stall.

As long as you can feel good compression while pulling starter cord, then the engine should start and run OK, you just need to find the little problem.

Well NOW my Picco .21 is TUNED
I got up early, changed the glow plug, set the needles pretty rich to get it running and stay running, ran it around in circles for a couple of tanks, leaned it out a bit more, ran a few straight lines back and forth, leaned it more until I started to feel the power and not notice any sputters and clean powerful starts. At around the 8 tanks, now this thing runs smooth low speeds and once that second gear kicks in, this thing screams for a speeding ticket. I get nice powerful take offs and now when I snap that throttle from a stand still, she no longer stalls, she just jumps for a take off. I get temp readings at a cool 210 - 230 on consistant runs slow through fast speeds.
I believe I tuned it to my ability

Thanks for the help
RJ

MaxxRunner,

I can say the same about my p2,AWESOME POWER both low and top end.
it wheelies on response even on the move in the 10-20mph range.
i'm running 70/23 gearing w/40series proline road hawgs, great on pavement.
i installed a much needed wheelie bar.
the biggest improvement for this motor was the rd logics pipe!

what type of surfaces do u drive on, loose dirt, hard packed, asphalt etc.?
what gearing?
what pipe?

Bad t everything in the drivetrain is stock but the suspension is all modified to RPM and Integy piggyback shocks and wide maxx talon rims with pin spike tires. I mainly run on compacted dirt track and a little back yard bashing. So far all i can say is WOW!!!

I also have the picco smallblock and if it flips upside down it stalls with-in 3 seconds. don't even have time to go and flip it over
What would cause this to happen

You are almost certainly too lean if it stalls out this quick upside down. However, it won't run a whole lot longer even if it's set properly. After all, when it's upside down the fuel tank does not get the pressure (the fitting is blocked by fuel), and, of course, the fuel pickup is dry as all the fuel is on the top of the tank.

To lean on the lsn or hsn
my traxxas motor i would just walk over to it when it flipped and it would stay running and this motor stall almost right away

cmb97, it sounds like you are too lean on the LSN. Try the simple pinch test; get the engine running up to operating temp, then bring it in and pinch the fuel line between your fingers. It should take 5 to 10 seconds for the engine to die (it usually revs higher for a second just before dying). If it dies real fast, then LSN is too lean.
