Ok, so I got an Adaptec USB2 card and installed it in my G4, I also installed a funky network storage driver at roughly the same time. Suddenly my box wouldn't enter sleep mode (like hibernation) fully, and would not wake up without cold booting it. At first I tought it was the software for the network storage, and reinstalled/upgraded the OS, and still had the same problem with sleep mode. The OS had other problems too, and I really wanted a clean fresh install of OS 10.3 So, tonight I started the old "lets see if it's the card" game. I've played this with many a PC doing hardware troubleshooting. The card required no driver installs, so I pulled it out of slot 4 and put it in slot 1 next to the agp. Same thing. since slot 2 had the TV capture card that did have drivers, I didn't want to move that one, so I moved the USB card to slot 3 and tada, my G4 will now enter sleep mode like it should.

For anyone that hasn't tried USB2, it's pretty fast, 480Mb xfer. Firewire is 400, but firewire2 is 800, that's smokin.

It's funny about slots and how they can effect things like sleep mode. I found that 3com modems and NIC cards do not like to be next to each other in PC's. I've also seen dead audio cards make a system appear to be completely fried (no power, or anything).

Anyway, it's fixed, I'm pumped, and life goes on.
