2 laptops on a wireless network. 54G router and 54 g cards in both laptops. run a speedtest on both. One shows a 10mb connection (correct) and the other shows up as less than a meg. what the deuce

Network cards would be my guess..
That or one Mobo/processor isn't processing the information fast enough

If the network cards are different then badabing theres the problem

Is one computer a bit older then the other?

one is an acer ferrari and one is a dell from work.

it ran fine until we changed modems with our new isp.

freakin weird.

if anything it would be the router. the modem is running at its provisioned speed.

I would expect that the acer would run better but you say it was running the same at one point

so you have a modem, connected to a router? same router you used to have or you changed it to?

used to have att dsl with their own all-in-one wireless router and modem. Switched to a cox 10 meg line so i am running a cable modem and linksys router.

if you are running them together maybe the router is giving one pc priority.
have you tried one at a time and switching wireless cards around?

Are there any network ports on that router? If so have you tried hard wiring the laptops to see if you still see a performance drop? Linksys routers can be weird sometimes in how they distribute the load. If you have no physical ports on the router you may want to log in and check the settings of the router.

Is the Dell the one with the 1mb connection away from the router? If it is, then the it is probably the antenna in the Dell. Internal antennas on older WiFi cards tend not to have the best reception. if this is the problem you might want to consider an external USB adapter. This would help with the reception problem.

hard wiring it gave me full speed. manually resetting either the internal wifi card or rebooting the router also gave me full speed for 5-10 minutes. I exchanged it for a new router and this one started timing out on me on every settings page. I updated the firmware and it timed out halfway through rendering it useless. I exchanged it for another one and this one actually works. no loss of speed and seems to be trucking right along like it should. They sure don't makem like they used to.

I've had nothing but trouble with Linksys routers. I just recently threw one in the bin after giving me grief for a few months. Had to power cycle it weekly to get internet. After getting a Apple Airport Express it feels like I doubled my internet speed.

Turns out the Linksys router was causing all kinds of problems. Never again.
