Guys i need some help. Me and my brother-in-law bought our t-Maxx's at the same time ( We went from electric to nitro) and we both seem to have the same problem. The Maxx is great when we could keep them running. We broke them in properly and run the proper fuel I even run mine rich, but can't seem to keep them running for more than 10 mins.. Is this the down fall to going to nitro? I have read some threads that have been posted in the past and took some suggestions like putting air ducts all over my truck, reloacted the air filter forward (for some cooler air) but my truck still overheats about 10 mins. into the bashing session.

I have a 2.5 engine.

Does anyboday know of a electric fan possibly that existes?

Please help me!!!!!!!!

richard how hot is it getting because mine runs anywhere from 259 too 300 the 2.5 is a tempermental sob that runs hot.

Welcome to the world of the 2.5 T-Maxx engine. Overheating seems to be a constant plague for a lot of 2.5 owners. It was for me too, until I switched to a Picco P2 .21. IMHO, Traxxas should have simply produced these trucks with a decent .21 and most of these tuning issues would be gone.

You sure you ain't running too lean? Maybe try opening up HSN a little. Also, the truck will lean itself out as fuel tank gets lower, which will cause temps to go up. Get some air flow by cutting a few holes in front of body, in grill area. Try a new cooling head, you can find them cheap.

Check for air leaks. Is the carb in there tight? Is the cinch-pin tight? Is the backplate tight? Sometimes the carb gets dirtied up. I like to take the carb off, take out the HSN and LSN (counting turns to re-install same way), spray everything with WD-40, then blow out with compressed air.

Are you bashing the truck real hard? If you keep the throttle wide open most of the time, then it will overheat quickly. If you are running it through tall grass, then the engine is working hard to move the truck and will overheat. The small .15 Traxxas engine is working very hard to push that big truck.

There are lots of things that can cause overheating. A bigger engine will solve a lot of these problems, but you may not want to spend the money. If all else fails and the engine continues to overheat no matter what you try, then you probably need a new piston and sleeve. My LHS owner sells tons of Maxxes, plus he owns 6 of them, plus he runs MT races at his shop. He says you need about 10 tanks to break in the 2.5 engine properly. If you broke it in for say four or five tanks, and then you have been hammering the Hell out of it, chances are you will need new piston and sleeve.

Here's a link to the Traxxas tuning section: http://www.traxxas.com/support/howto/trx_howto.htm

Good luck

I had lots of these problems with my maxx. It sat on the shelf for about a year, then I bought a buggy. It broke, and nobody has parts for it, so I started messing with the maxx again. I added a few hop-up parts including a Golden Horizen cooling head for the 2.5, and the temps are down from 280-300+ to 245-270. The best part is yesterday I ran it for the first 2 full tanks since break in. So get a coolig head for it and have fun!

i also have the golden horizon head on my tmaxx and the temps stay down around 250-270
i waited to buy a 2.5 max just to see what bugs it had

Maxrev here I started useing 20% nitro.[My Tmaxx is running cool around 250 260.

It might be that you lsn is a tad lean. That usually sends temps up high and in a hurry. I have no experience with this engine, but you say that your running it on the rich side and its still hot, so I would check the lsn.

If the LSN is too lean, it will heat up quickly, and it's not something you can correct with the HSN. Richen the LSN slightly, run the truck and keep taking temp checks. Once you notice that the temp is coming down, you can start to adjust the HSN for performance at WOT. You still need to check the temp till it's right. I have the same engine, and the most important thing you could do to it to make it run good, and keep the temps normal is add a bigger cooling head. The stock head is the pits. I'm using the ACNCM monster cooling head, and I strongly recommend it.

I had the same problem I switched to ODonnel after break in. but it overheated after 15 min. so I switched to Blue Thunder and it rocks. Also for me when its to hot out side like 90 deg to 100 I can't stop my truck from over heating so I wait till it cools.

Did anybody happen to note that this was a months old thread that got revived? The original post is from April and the originator may not even be following it anymore...let alone still having the problem. Just thought you'd like to know.
