Hey guys I just bought a HPI Trophy 3.5 buggy and for the first tank of break in I'm doing what the manual says which is to let it sit with the wheels off the ground at idle. I'm doing that but the engine quickly jumps up to about 200 degree F. Should I richen it out? Could it be the fuel? (fuel is kind of old) What would you guys recommend doing?

210 is definitely NOT a problem. Even 220 or 230 is a good place to be for the break in.

Don't run it off the ground but run it slowly ON the ground.

Alright will do. But 210 isn't high just for sitting at idle? I'm worried about what the temp is going to be once the rpms start to climb a lil bit. I'm going to buy new fuel right now just to be safe. But should the high speed needle be touched at all during break in? Or should it be left at the factory setting?

The last break in I did my XXL idled at 202F and when I was running it during the break out it was running between 208-218F mostly. Id say your right in the ballpark.

You definetely have to drive it while breaking it in. If it starts to climb over 220° you can simply richen the high speed needle about 1/8th of a turn.....counter-clockwise. That will help it stay at the ideal break-in temerature, which is about 190-220°.

That is about a perfect temp actually. Anywhere from 200-230 is where I like to break in at.If you put it on the ground and run it around a tiny bit nice and slow the air flow will help cool it a little bit. I really don't like the idle on a box method though.

Traxxas actually says never set up on stand and idle or run it for breakin. Not sure about other brands but my opinion is that its not good for any motor to be brken in that way. Also break it in with the fuel that you plan to use always. A good 20 or 30% nitro should be fine. If you wish i will post word for word the traxxas 2.5 and 3.3 breakin rules for a 5 tank breakin period. Let me know

HPI actually recommends for the first tank to break in with the wheels off the ground. Weird I know, but I broke in the first tank(for the most part) doing very slow circles. But I can't even finish my break in procedure because my receiver goes crazy and makes the car floor itself, good thing I still had control of steering so I could steer it in my direction and stop it. But once I got new fuel the temp dropped by about 20 degrees.

Rig you up a throttle return spring if you dont already have one. My revo does but i need to mount one on my tmaxx. The maxx stuck wide open on me once before and the only thing that saved me from a bad ending was to steer it into a rollover in some brush.

What fuel do you run to have the temp drop that much? I run 20% and i really need to get a digital gauge.
