have a new os .21 vg px i'm trying to put on a tmaxx. anyone know how these motors run, and do you think an hpi exhaust header will fit it.

I'm guessing you have a big block conversion for your t-maxx?

The 21VG replaced the 21RG if I'm not mistaken. It was a good engine. Not a real powerhouse, but really reliable and plenty of power for a 21 maxx. The VG appears to be a bit higher performance than the RG series. The internals appear much more "polished".

i just bought mounts and hope that everything holds up.

Um... what mounts? The chassis is too short between the trans/rear tower to not have an extended chassis intended for a true big block. Or did you move the transmission forward?

Even with the XTM extended chassis I barely had enough room. Smashed a BB header or two with the right rear inside shock.

um yeah, not sure if it will fit, thought it would. i have hot racing mounts. not sure even to put these on. am i sol.

More than likely that engine won't fit in that truck. Not without some modifying or a conversion kit.

Personally, I would never put more than the TRX3.3 or OS18TM/TZ in a t-maxx. The diffs/trans/driveshafts just can't take the abuse of a real big block very well. It's been heavily documented... a lot by myself ;)

I had a BB maxx many years ago and was constantly dealing with drive train issues. I gave up and got a savage. I'd never get a small block MT again. They have their place in the hobby, but they aren't for me.

Where did you get the engine? Send it back and get a 3.3 and call it a day. Probably the easiest/cheapest solution.

Bought off local guy. Probably will take back. any takers 139.00$

Strange that OS marks it $10 cheaper than the non-pullstart version, $150 vs $160. Usually they are the other way around.

I believe you have to have 3 months here or 50 posts before you can sell. They frown upon that. May want to kick it to ebay.

EDIT:
Check that...

i'll try ebay thanks. however, does the os .21 tm mount to stock tmaxx motor mounts. i think i can get one of those.

Well... not without mangling stuff.

I'd think about moving the trans forward 1 hole (use the rear 6 remaining holes to hold it down) and do whatever dremel work necessary to do that. Then your still stuck trying to find a header that will work and cutting new slots in the chassis for the BB motor mounts.

It's easier to modify the truck than it is to modify the engine. You goof up the engine and your out an entire engine.

I still say list it on ebay and buy a 3.3. Much less hassle and also less problematic if you don't feel like going for a BB conversion chassis.

bought a 3.3 a while back and never could get it to run right. sold it. gonna stick with this os.

i did move the tranny up. had to shorten front driveshaft and then put front axle shaft onto rear center drive shaft. Seems to be working. just need to get my mount on and try to fit the header and i think it's going to work.. thanks, that idea of moving tranny up was a big help.

Yeah. I know many years ago, that was a "mod" that guys would do to install a BB. That was before conversion kits came out. Old info, but it should work.

The only problem is that the chassis is really short and if you do get it to work, it's going to be a twitchy truck due to the excess power and lack of chassis length to harness it.

what about extended throttle linkage. looks like i'll have to move the bellcrank out just a little. now the throttle linkage is short. any ideas.

Changing throttle linkage is easy of you have the bits to do it. Every LHS I've been to sells threaded rod or threaded end rod. You just need to find it and buy a few pieces. They come in handy. They also sell just rod that isn't threaded in case you have to use z-bends. Usually, on things that have a z-bend, I make a new rod and use du-bro's small captured ball ends instead. z-bend connections tend to wear over time and cause a lot of slop. The little ball ends hold up for years on t/b duties.

I think this is the size of wire I usually buy:

This is a photo of my old savage throttle linkage with the ball ends I linked to above:
