Os .18

First off, I'm still enjoying my stock TRX .15 engine. Having said that, after making some necessary changes to my car, it looks like upgrading isn't all that difficult. In the future I know I'll want more power.

When I go to upgrade, after seeing numerous recommendations here, i'll get an OS .18. One question that comes to mind is, what's the biggest difference between pull-start and the Traxxis electric start? Has anyone retro-fitted an electric start onto an OS engine? Are electric starts for weenies?

Bill - I was talking to the LHS guy, he seemed to indicate that pull-start just required a little wrist finesse and nothing more. With the electric-start, there is usually some throttle feathering going on, while the EZ Start module is still engaged. How does the pull-start work?

iT WORKS JUST LIKE A LAWN MOWER PUT YOUR IGNITER ON AND PULL.I THINK os HAS AN .18 with a pull start on it already that would be the best way to go. check tower hobbies they have good prices.

They have a 15 with pull start.

A .15 would probably be better suited for a nitro sport. .18 would be a little overkill unless you plan on running bigger tires. Electric or pull, if everything is setup properly, the engine should fire instantly. 2-3 pulls or 1-2 seconds with the engine primed.

Matt - in your opinion, is the OS .15 a better engine than the stock Traxxas unit? Why? Not being argumentative, just genuinely curious.

Right now, start-ups are getting better and better. Generally speaking, it takes about 5 seconds of ez-start and engine throttling to get thing running nicely. Sometimes, say up to 10 seconds on the EZ starter is required.

The difference is in the tolerances and overall quality. Traxxas mills are built on the cheap side to keep vehicle cost down. And the tolerances aren't as close so that break in is easier for novices. Where as you can tune the Traxxas engine for performance at the 5 tank mark, the O.S. will need close to a gallon of fuel ran through it before it really loosens up and makes all of it's power. The O.S. will turn a lot more rpm's and have way more overall power. Last a lot longer if broken in right too. By all means, run your stock engine if your happy with the performance. Doing research for the future is a smart move. You'll know your new engine inside and out before you even order it.

Just did a little research... The O.S. 12-TZ engine, while smaller than my stock engine, makes some really impressive power (in my own rookie opinion.) I guess when you drop $250.00, you're gonna get what you pay for. lol

I wonder if that power would be better served in a 4WD setup? The last thing I want is a tricky-to-drive wheelie machine such as the Jato. All though, that does bring up the sub-question; what's involved in converting my car into a 4WD config? Hmm...

It's easy to covert - buy a different rig! Seriously I don't think you'll be able to make the sport a 4wd.
