I just bought the orion wasp 18 w/slide carb. I installed it a couple nights ago. I have since started the breakin process, I'm on tank 3.

Whenever I buy an engine, I tear it completely apart and clean the inside out. You would be suprised how many aluminum shavings you will find. Unfortunatly, orion doesn't include a parts explosion with this engine and it's unlike any engine I've had apart. The piston doesn't have a cutout in the skirt to clear the crankshaft, so I'm not 100% sure if I got it put back in the right way. It does have about a 4mm hole in the skirt of the piston, but I'm not sure what that's for either. It doesn't appear to line up with anything else. Also, the sleeve doesn't have a guide pin. You have to line it up by eye. That's pretty simple though as it lines up with the crease (sp) where the two halves of the crank case comes together.

As it is right now, I can see the 4mm hole in the piston skirt through the exhaust port. Anyone know if this is right?

Thanks.

i also noticed that when i took my wasp .18 apart, all i plan on doing is lining the exhaust port on the sleeve up with the exhaust port on the engine block. i guess it would of been smart to mark everything before i took it apart. lol. maby this is why the engine was so cheap.

well i was smart and marked the piston and sleeve. lol. and i dont have the piston and sleeve in my hands.. its with OSRocket being resized. so i will tell u once i get it back. lol.

Glad to hear your such a f'n genious:D

Just kidding. I thought the same damn thing once I had it in pieces... hmmm, should have marked these... dammit!

Anyway, the hole in the piston skirt should not be visible through the exhaust port. After running 3 tanks through it with the hole visible through the exhaust port, I was getting erratic running, to hot >260 with so much fuel it was pouring out of the exhaust, no power at all... I mean none!

So, I brought it back to the house, rotated the piston, filled the tank then yanked and hoped... man, this thing scoots. It started raining about halfway through my first tank with the piston in correctly (total of tank 4). I have a feeling it's going to do exactly what I wanted. More power, less $.

I'll post a more thorough report once it's broken in and I get a few hours of play time out of it.

By the way, any idea if the piston/sleeve is ABC or ABN? I've read 2 different things about it, one thing saying ABC, one saying ABN. ABN would make sense since a replacement piston and sleeve is only $35. I wonder if the OSRocket guy can tell...

ok, i will keep that in mind once i get my piston and sleeve back, hopefully i had it together right when i sent it... lol. i will send OSRocket a e-mail to see if he knows if its ABC or ABN and let u know. The Wasp .18 does have a good amount of power for the price $90... nice.

hey i just got my piston and sleeve back from OSRocket, very fast deal. anyways before i could push my piston right through the sleeve and now i can barely get the piston 3/4 of the way through the sleeve. everything looks great. He said he had to do somethin on this piston and sleeve because of the way the con-rod is... i was wondering if there is a e-clip or c-clip holding that pin in on the piston. the pin that goes through the piston and con-rod? cuz the pin just like slides right out.

I noticed that too. I think it's kind of a hokey set up, but it appears to work ok. On mine there was some sort of plastic/glass/ceramic ball on the end of the pin so that when it does slide out, it rubs on the sleeve wall but doesn't mar it up.

yea same here, i just thought on other engines there was a e-clip or c-clip, atleast on the TRX, and OS i think. well i will give it a shot and see. o yea and u can't see the pin through the exhaust port, i just checked my marks and stuff.

Not the pin... there is about a 4mm hole in the skirt. You shouldn't be able to see that through the exhaust port. The pin, I think you can see that, at least the edge of it.

yea i know what u mean, well i put my piston and sleeve back together they way it was when it was apart and then lined the sleeve up with the exhaust port and i will re-break in the engine tomorrow.
