RC Driving Style
Just bought an "old Style" T-Maxx, was wondering what engine and modifications would make it run and perform like the 2.5 T-Maxx. Right now it is stock except for a Engine, Shocks and pipe. It has a Megatech M-16 (which I have been told is junk) engine. I have flown Nitro planes for awhile, but am new to Trucks. I have not tried to run this thing yet, but I plan to tommorrow. . . . Is there anything I should know before lighting it off?

Go over the truck well, make sure everything is tight, not missing screws, check your gear mesh, make sure you have a fuel filter. As far as Megatech engines, they are notoriously junk, I have never owned one, but from their rep I would not. A number of companys make a .18 mill that will drop in, but you will need to modify the linkage for the slide carb, this is fairly simple. You could also use the JT Racing slide carb conversion as well. I still run an early Maxx, while there are very very few traxxas parts still left on it, I still love that truck. Good luck with it.

Thnx for the reply. I think it is all ready to go. I am not sure how well it is going to run @ 98 degrees F and 70% humidity but I am going to give it a try. Which .18 engine would you say is the best for it's cost? My LHS is trying to sell me an OS .18 CVRX. Is this a decent mill, or is there a better one for the money that wil drop right in?

yeah thats a preatty good mill from what I hear. I was going to do the same in my Maxx, I actually recieved it from tower and everything, then I was decided to do the .21 swap, and sent it back and got a Hyper 8 port. I still run my Old skool but like NC, I dont have anything stock left on it..lol
I would suggest the wasp 18 also, but like NC said youll have to do a coversion to switch it to a slide carb which will involve moving a servo around a bit. its fairly easy but will take some time. Do a search for wasp 18 conversiona dn you should find some of my old post and replies from people to get the job done. Good luck.

well. . . I took it out and gave it try this afternoon. Initially it fired right off and and after a little tuning I got it running pretty good. It was running hot though (300F), and no trace of smoke, so I assumed lean and shut it off to cool before making any more adjustments. I waited about ten minutes and richened it up and it hasn't ran since. It will pop and sputter momentarily and then it just dies. I changed the plug and have tried various combinations of rich/lean settings (not that I know what I am doing) and this P.O.S. will not run. . . .Anyone have any suggestions ? ? ?

I definately think it is my tuning. I just got back inside. I decided to try it again after sundown cause it's cooler. It fired right up and I richened it until it was running hard at 263 degrees and trailing just a hint of blue. I ran 2/3 of a tank through it and then I slowed down to turn around and when I got it straight I nailed it and bogged down for about 2 seconds and then died. . . .could not get it restarted. . . . . Tried for about 10 minutes.

Some things i learned about tuning, you may already know this and you may notbut here it goes. first key thing i just started doing that helped me out alot is turn the needles no more than about the size of a flat headed skrew drivers head. Well i know it may take quite a wile doing this but it didnt die when i tryed to hit the gas like it did all the other times.
Second once i found a ok spot for the low speed needle i left it and only focused on the hsn(high speed needle). I set my lsn (low speed needle)probly richer than most cuz when i accelerate it boggs and dies some times but what ever.when adjusting the hsn i work my way rich (a skrewdrivers head) tell it starts to cut out then i lean it about 3-4 skrew driver heads. Just started this method yesterday and it runs great for me now.
You dont have to do anything i said though if you dont want to its just my 2 cents. Hopefully this will help you, if not i just wrout a whole lot for nothing good luck.

oh and some thing else take your time you shouldnt have to go any where if your playing w/ your truck.Sorry if i sound bossy dont mean to.

Thanks fish. . .I have not been tuning that delicately. I have been ham fisting it (so to speak). What would you consider to be a good baseline setting for the lsn? I tend to think this is the problem because the hsn should not affect an engines ability to start and idle should it? Also it would seem that this problem does not occur until the engine reaches operating temp. Does a Nitro engine get leaner or richer as the core reaches operating temp? Maybe a stupid question. . . Hence the newbie label under my name. .
