Old RC10T Noise Question

Okay guys so here is my situation: Broke out my early 90s RC10T with a stock 540 motor (dont know the turn on it) and a POS mechanicel speed controller...bought a new 1800mah nickel battery and just ran it, runs surprisingly fine accept there is this horrible screaching noise at certain rpms and when it occurs the power drops significantly. So the LHS guy said the motor shaft gear is too close to the tranny gear if that makes any sense but I ran the motor buy itself without it making contact with the tranny and I still hear the sound so I suspect its the crappy speed controller or motor itself and nothing to do with the tranny, plus I notcie the run times are about 5mins now instead of 12. I'm just getting back into this hobby so I'm way rusty on all the terms but maybe someone here can filter thru my description and tell me what the problem really is...THANKS GUYS!

It sounds like the gear mesh was a bit too tight from what the hobby shop guy was saying. From what you said about it is still making the noise with just the motor running, I would just replace the motor and the mechanical speed controller with a newer brushed ESC and 540 motor. This would be an inexpensive fix that would let you return it to its vintage condition easily if you choose.

Yeah thats what I was thinking. What's the quickest brush motor you think I could run in this truck? I'm thinking 15T 540 with updated esc but is there a bigger brushed motor? If there is it's probably more maintence.

That should be plenty in your rig. If you're wanting any more power then consider brushless.

15T 540 will do you well .That noise your hearing sound like bad motor bearing or the armature is not staying centered in the magnetic field.
