I have a friend with a really old EMAXX. It has the original Orange and purple Novak EVX ESC on it and the twin titan 550's. He wants to upgrade it for use with lipos so his kid can play with it. I've never owned an emaxx or tmaxx so I'm gonna ask you guys. Should he be looking at 1/10 scale or 1/8 scale brushless replacement? (bear in mind that his 6 year old is going to be playing with it not him so he doesn't need a MMM/2200kv combo in it like the new ones have lol)

Also, Will he need to upgrade to a new tranny that can handle the brushless power and are the new trannys direct drop ins?

Thanks in advance.

brushless in the 3906 is a costly thing. The new tranny won't fit.
It'll need new diffs/shafts/slipper modded to new style/internal gears modded to fit in the tranny. there is a narrow 3906 and wide 3906.
I done the mods just for a larger brushed dewalt. With brushless it'll need more.

Ok well are the old titan 550's lipo compatible if he just buys a new ESC? He says the 550s still look like they're in working order. whats the max cell count youd want to run on them. I'm assuming any motor is technically lipo compatible as long as the voltage doesn't exceed its intended max.

you can run the pair of 2s lipo on the old orange esc. Just need the LVA/LVC, But temps may go up.
The motors, they're hit or miss. Some last a long time, some just last a few runs. If they have been used on nimhs for a few runs lipo wouldn't be a problem. Going straight into lipo on new motors might see the magic smoke be released from the motors quite soon.

The blue evx can use 7cell nimh wired in series on input, then output paralleled to the motors. The orange was meant for 6cell but quite a few also used 7cell and was still ok.
The orange esc has a bec output of only 5V which isn't good.

Whats a good brushed motor replacement for the titan 550s that he could use with lipo? Something that wont tear up the stock tranny

You can use anything 550 sized. The lower turn number the faster the motor turns. So a 20 turn motor turns less rpm than a 10. The 20 turn will have more torque though. Depending on which route you take is what determines your gearing

personally i like one motor systems, especially when it uses throw away motors.
Slap a 14.4V dewalt motor in. Costs maybe the same as 2x 550's.
Ebay chop shops for the new revo spec diffs, new emaxx has I-bar, Tmaxx doesn't so will require new diff carrier and I bar.
Revo spec are just sealed diffs.
FleEbay cvd's from RCbest. Becareful there is narrow 3906 and wide 3906.
Steel idlers to replace the 2 plastic ones in tranny. These need grinded down.
That'll hold a dewalt, Maybe a weak brushless.
If you need links I can put some up.
