What should I mod out of the box? I am thinking just the steering (servo saver) bushings, upgrade to ball bearings. I had a Savage 4.6 last year, but sold it. The X, I have heard, is quite a bit better. This is the new X, has the aluminum diff housings and steel spur gear and hardened clutch bell. I was thinking of getting the reverse module, any thoughts on this? Not worried about weight, but complexity and such. I am a pretty experienced r/c'er, just haven't posted in a long while on here!

My LHS got me a decent deal, at least I think $360 is a decent deal. I realized after nearly a year, I kind of missed my Savage. The X seems to be more "performance" oriented, rather than "solid as a hammer, and nearly as destructive" as the previous iterations.

If you have any intentions of installing the three speed or the reverse module (or both), now is the time to get them, as installing them requires a pretty intensive tear-down of the truck.

The reverse module will require a 3rd servo, a "standard" one will do as not much torque/speed is needed. If you have a two channel radio, you will need the mixer from HPI as well.

Ya I'm getting the 4.6ss in about a month or so too, what can i say...I'm a savage man. I'm pretty satisfied with the savage x f4.1 so i guess i will not be disapointed. Good luck with yours!!!

i would install wat eveyone else said except the reverse module

who needs reverse anyways , i took mine out of my revo and it just strengthens the tranny less moving parts is always a good thing, and you might have to walk around abit more , i still find reverse for lazy people (no offense to anyone)=devil

i hope you have deep pockets, that should set you back a few 400 to 500 $ for a savage x ss

Well, so far I am putting a Futabe 3pm 2.4ghz radio. Not sure on a steering servo, I have had good luck with Futaba servos, so probably go with one of their high torque (124 o/z in) servos. Will not go with reverse, since it's not a needed thing (I could use all the excercise I can get). Will probably go with ball-bearings in the servo saver area (not sure why they use plastic bushings there).

the savage is pretty nice stock, the things that lack are the steering servo, and brakes...

a better servo and bearings will take care of that, and i think the new savages come with the dual disk setup. if so you should be fine on the brakes.

i personally use the reverse, since i bash only i find the truck nose first into a bush, wall, ditch, etc. its nice to flip a switch and back out.

if it comes with a rotostart, you may look into a pull starter, the roto kills the one ways fast.

other then that bash the heck out of it.. its a savage it likes it rough!!

well, i am getting the X SS version, the kit. Doesn't come with a roto start, but I am adding one. Have had one on every recent nitro and have never fouled up a one-way bearing. However, I have broken a few pullstarts, so 6 of one, half dozen of the other. I will probably get a futaba servo, cannot recall the model number, but it's 124 oz/in of torque. I might go the reverse route, if it's a reliable option.

I have gotten 2 X SS kits now. I would defiantly get the reverse module. its very easy to install. I use the Futaba 3pm TX( http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGAG2**&P=ML ) and a Futaba R203HF 3 RX ( http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCSX3&P=7 ) The RX has a built in failsafe for all 3 channels and will detect low battery and low signal. The 3rd channel also makes it very easy to flip from forward to reverse. This RX requires digital servos though. also the 124oz of torque would be sufficient but I went with this. Hobbico CS-170 Std Digital Ultra Torq 2BB TG Servo U with 333 oz-in ( http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNRN6&P=7 ) As for the roto start it is pointless. it is just another thing to have to carry around when you bash, the HPI engine that comes with the kit is very reliable and starts very easily. If you want to upgrade the steering to ball bearings then go with this http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJAB0&P=7 it is all aluminum and it comes the ball bearings.

With my previous savage, I just added the bearings in place of the hpi bushings. the hpi steering was fine the way it is, well, with the bearings added. As far as the rotostart, I have no issues with them, so will continue to use it.
The reverse I may add, since I am not concerned about weight, in the least. I am also going to put MGT tires and wheels (picked up a full set for $17 NIB on ebay). The monster GT tires last longer, and I like the centerline-style wheels better. Getting anxious to get my new toy.

oh, also, my radio will be this: Gives me the option to use digital or analog servos. Not sure what the main advantage of digital is, so will just stick with analogs.

A little out of my budget. My previous savage worked ok with a futaba s3305. I have ultimate confidence in futaba quality, never have used anything else.
Metal gears, 124 oz/in, fast transit time. Will see. if it isn't up to the task, i will go with something else.

I would go with the S3305 for steering and S3010 for throttle/brake,with a hump pack. I have never had any radio issues and I use the same setup on both my savages.

i hav a t maxx 2.5r i hav only had it for a week but i think i might sell it already because the savages just look sooooo much better i never really considered them before i baught the t maxx but the more i look at the the more i think i should get a savage x ss and i love kits

So far it's been fun. I only work on it on occasion. so, it should be completed in a month or so!
