I bought an OFNA temp gun (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEYJ4&P=ML) of eBay and I’m not too sure whether it’s working or not.

I wasn't sure how to use it as it came with no instruction so I asked the seller for some advice. He said ‘put it over the engine and press the button’ :hammer: . As he was no help I thought I’d turn to RCNT.

There is a mode button which switches from ‘min’, ‘max’ which I understand and I think I know what ‘lock’ does but I was using it yesterday and I was getting some really random readings. For example, 356 degrees Fahrenheit for an idle engine and 124 degrees Celsius for my hand.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether I’m doing anything wrong.

124 Celcius!!! Wow, were you on fire at the time? That's over 300 F!

Sounds like it's either broke or, um, broke.

I mean it is just a temp gun and only has 2 buttons. I would have to assume the mode button would switch it betwee farenheit and celcius and might also show you maxx and min temp. The little button on the side would be my guess as to what to use when taking a temp.

Boiling water is 100C and 212F. That's always an easy test to see how far off a thermometer is.

It sure sounds broken, you definitely shouldn't be reading 124'C on your hand. Not even 124'F. You should check two things b/f determining if it is truly trashed.

---Get a new battery for it and try that
---Check the IR lens (where it takes the temp) - It could be dirty - You can take some rubbing alcohol and put it on a q-tip and wipe off the lens - Blow out and debris first b/f you wipe it. **Don't look at the lens and push the button.** Simply check it for debris and clean it off.

After you try that and you still get bad readings, then I would definitely email the seller back and let them know they sold a broken item.

Just for a quick check, set it to Fahrenheit and take a reading off your tongue. Seriously. Nurses do that with stubborn old patients.
Let us know what number you get.
If you're getting 124C from your hand, we know that's WAY off. Maybe the Fahrenheit scale works and only the Centigrade is messed up.
I have a feeling you got ripped off.

oh lovely, so the overall verdict is that i got sold a dudd! i'll try cleaning it and getting some new batteries but i think i'll leave the tongue thing for another day - i'll tell you the results from the tests later tonight

Thanks guys

i left my RC in Manchester while i was in London so didn't manage to get at the Temp Gun.
i was fiddling with the mode button on temp gun and there is a setting named 'E'. the range of the 'E' is from 5-100. the nearer to 100 it is the lower the readings. i've got it (E) set to 92 at the moment and all seems well - boiling water 98 degree celcius and brother tongue 36 (close enough).
i've got the glow stick charging so when i get home i'll check my engine temps.

i guess what i'm asking is: Does the 'E' stand for error and what should it be set to or is it up to the individual to set it?

i didn't get sold a dudd!!!! woo hooo :breakdown

I have no idea what the 'E' is for, but it sounds like it's working. With the toungue test, it's always a few degrees cooler than it would be with a thermometer under the tongue and the mouth closed, but it's close enough to tell if the person has a fever.
Glad to hear you got it figured out.
