Could I get about the same run time out of a NiMH pack based on AA cells as I could out of a NiCad pack based on C-cells, if the milliamp ratings are similar?

well it all depends on how well the batteries are taken care of. nicad needs to be fully discharged and charged when used and discharged when its stored or else a memory will develop. not doing this will have a decrease in voltage and run time. for nimh, about 40% of juice needs to be inside the cell during storage and do not need to be discharged when stored.

I'm going to assume you really mean sub-C packs vs. regular C sized cells. If that's the case, then "no". I have not seen one AA battery that can sustain the high drain rates that any sub-C can dish out. The AA's would smoke themselves in a minute if subjected to the loads that a R/C motor would put on it.
