noob with my first RC - Revo

i probably bought in over my head but I've wanted one for about 6 years and accidentally found myself in a hobby shop today. its christmas and my b-day is on the 27th so i said F-it.

walked out with a new revo 3.3, a gallon of 20% fuel and a new battery for the starter for $500.11. hopefully i didnt get ripped off hahahaha. i picked the revo truck because i thought it looked awesome and the employee said that its one of his favorites (of-coarse he will say that to sell it to me haha)

anyways i watched the DVD tonight and got to fooling around with it. i set the body up a little higher on the body mounts (just pulled the screws and moved it up) and i adjusted the bar that goes from the shock pivot thingys to the front wheel area to make it sit a little higher...just to make it look tough hahah.

anyways i am looking for any info that you guys may think will be helpful to me. the weak points, the doos and dont's. any CHEAP parts that will make it stronger. thats my main fear is breaking this stupid machine. I've never really driven a real rc before but the guy at the hobby shop said that this is one of the toughest.

i'm guna hate to see that first scratch on my new toy! it still has that new car smell:hehe:

whats the deal with these extended travel suspension parts? should i put those on for the extra travel or is the factory setup superior?

ill basically be a weekend warrior with this truck. i will end up jumping, hitting curbs, flipping, mudding and fun junk like that. maybe an occasional track run but nothing competitive. just good fun.

I'd recommend not mudding as you can run your steering servo, receiver and possibly get water in your engine. Your going to have to learn how to tune the carb and i suggest you get a temp gun, and try to keep the temps of the engine in the mid 200'sF. I don't know if you bought anymore glow plugs, but i suggest you do because most likely you will go through one or two in the break in. A good thing to do is read the posts in the general nitro section of this forum to get a good idea on how to take care of it and tune. Tuning can be the hardest thing but don't get discouraged. Your going to want to get after run oil, and take the air filter off and dump some in the carb and let it go through the engine after EVERY run (unless your gonna use it a day later). Make sure you never let it sit with fuel in it after running. Dont try to hit curbs as you will most likely break parts. Also replace the battery for the transmitter and receiver every hour of running and clean the air filter every hour of running. Thats just the basics. I would watch the DVD over and over the break in procedure because that is the most important thing to do when just buying a new nitro rc. If you have any problems, concerns questions feel free to ask them here, thats what we are here for.

first off u need to put a wing and some dish wheels.then go out and let the plastic pieces break as they do and fix from there.ALWAYS have spare spur gears
 
I might have the model numbers flipped, but I'm pretty sure the 5309 is the 'racing' version. It has the 'Forward-Only' conversion (FOC) - which means no reverse. It also has a few other small upgrades.

For someone like yourself, I think the 5308 is better.

Before you even think about putting fuel in it, seriously consider getting a temp gun. For someone who is new to the hobby, most can't tell when their engine is running hot by the sound. For $25, it's the best investment you can make to ensure you don't burn up your motor (IMO). The TRX3.3 like to run 'hotter' than a lot of other engines. As a general rule for nitro RC's, a good temp range is 200F - 240F. I've heard of several people (me included) who's 3.3 will only run good around 260F-270F.
 
Wow i remember saying those same exact words.

Congrats on the new Revo, i still am a firm believer that it is the best 1/10 scale MT on the market. i hope you enjoy it as much as i did when i first got mine.

and believe me, once the first ding, dent, scratch happens. it will suck, you will be a little depressed for a minute, than you will take it back out and have alot of fun with it. the Revo is a very tough truck and its made to be flipped, jumped, rolled over and everything in between. have fun and make all us revo owner proud and bash the Hell out of it! lol

you made a good choise, the revo is the best

you did have the model numbers flipped.mine is the 5308 and it does not have reverse. i dont mind not having reverse...it will make me a better driver in the end because i know i cannot back up whenever i want.

I've already bashed the hell out of it haha. the body mounts are grinded down from concrete, the body is scratched up, i flipped it on concrete and peeled off some insulation from the glo-plug wire and i hit a wierd hole and got it cartwheeling from a full speed run:hehe: i cringed on that one. it cartwheeled for a good 15-20 yards before landing on its feet. it kept going. this is one tough little mofo.

the only prob i had was keeping the front right wheel on the truck:\it kept falling off during break in and i am afraid of overtightening that little plastic nut. it feels really weak. maybe some blue loc-tight?

whats the point of a wing? i dont want to make my truck look like a ricer haha. also whats wrong with these wheels and tires? or, whats so much better about dish wheels?
 
Cool, the model without reverse is better and you're right, you'll be a better driver with that one. :D

You can tighten the wheel nuts down pretty snug. The nylon will wear out and using some blue loc-tite is great for keeping them secure.

You don't need a wing, since you'll mainly be bashing, the rig is going to get beat up regardless. The wing does provide some protection but it's not necessary to a basher.
