I noticed a good amount of slop in my rear wheels, so I took the axle carrier off thinking I was going to find 2 bearings but they turned out to be brass (copper?) rings.

Looked through my r/c drawers and found traxxas 4611 5x11x4mm ball bearings that appear to be the same size. Can I use these instead? Would it be better with the bearings or should I just use the stock rings?

5X11X4mm bearing are the proper size bearings to use...at least in the 2WD Pede anyway. Not sure how much it will help "slop" but it will roll a hell of a lot smoother

Your axle stubs may be worn from the bushings, as GW stated, the bearing are WAY better than bushings. I also added an couple extra TEFLON washers to "tighten" things up.
