Pull starter won't grab, what gives? and then when i do get it started it won't stay running for more than 2 minutes, I've had small block chevy's that are easier to start. Just bought it for son, RTR 1/16.

Is it brand new? If so, it sounds like it needs a tune. And check the engine back plate and make sure its secure against the engine

Ya, it's new and the pull starter is secure against the back of the engine, I even pulled it off to see what it looked like thinking it may be stripped but it's not.....I can pull it all the way out without it grabing any thing.

What brand of engine? The 2 minute run time is tuning. The starter not grabbing might be the one way bearing. (unless it is a Kyosho engine).

And being new, are you following the instructions for breaking in the engine?

Ya followed the instructions to the tee for breaking in, I agree with the tuning part, I probly need to lean it out some, as far as the pull start, I pulled the engine and removed the pull mechanism and I think the hex head on the crank may be moving out away from the engine back plate, I wonder if the spring that is in there is not enough to hold it all the way in????

You need to tell me what kind of engine or vehicle so we know what we're dealing with here. Do you rotate that "hex head" and it turns the engine? You should be able to rotate it in one direction and it will grab and turn the engine but it will slip when rotating the other direction.

Sorry it's an .07 Vertigo, and yes it will grab in one direction and it's free in the other.

I can't find any instructions for that engine. I assume that if you can rotate that hex nut and it grabs, your one way bearing is OK. I have had starters slip and had to shim it inside the engine to keep the starter shaft tight against the crank pin but I have never had one slipping on the nut on the outside. You say there is a spring to push the starter casing onto the nut? Me being me, if that was mine , I'd try to stretch the spring to put some more tension on it but that is probably not the thing to do. If you got that from a hobby shop, you need to take it back to them and let them fix it.

Clean the OWB and the shaft with denatured alcohol. If it slips every time you pull the cord you've put it in backwards.
It's not uncommon to get the OWB oily during the rich settings of the break in process.

I've had one way bearings that work fine in my fingers then slip once the pull starter is installed. Do what Rolex says and clean the shaft and bearing. Make sure you use something plastic safe.

Awesome will do....I now need to get a new pull starter, had it sitting on bench and my son grabbed it and started pulling it and exploded the spring inside, ugh!

ahhhhhhhhhhh!! You can put that spring back in there. After you do you will be a 100% professional RC mechanic! Anyone who can put one of those springs back in is a genius!
