Years ago in the 80's I bought a Tamiya Lunchbox and I really enjoyed building the truck about as much as I did running it. I have thought about buying a nitro truck just for some fun around the house but everything I see is RTR. Can you still buy the kit or is everything RTR? I am looking at the Losi XXl or a Savage XL.

Plenty of Kits out there but there are mainly aimed more at the racer. Which is NOT a bad thing because a quality race kit will be much stronger than any basher kit/rtr out there. and that includes the savage. Only downside is that you would have to get your own engine, radio electronics, tires in most cases.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of monster truck racer kits but if you are not after a monster truck kit brands to look at would include Losi, Mugen, Team associated, LRP (1/8 scale stuff), there are plenty of others.

I have one more question. Which truck would you recommend for bashing and a little racing? I raced karts for 12 years and quit a couple years ago and I have thought about going rc racing. I really wish there were more kits available. To me a lot of the fun is building and working on it.

savage every time for bashing. they are seriously a solid piece of kit. will take alot of punishment.:p:

To me, the greatest joy in this hobby is the build or rebuild. I would also recommend the Savage SS. If you plan to do any upgrades along the way, go with FLM, Fast Lane Machine.

you could allways buy a rtr truck and take it all apart and double check everthing when you put it back together.
now you will know about all its parts and you will be sure that everthing is ok

As much as I love the size of the savage I would have to say go with a buggy or truggy. Every time I take the savage out something breaks on it quickly, however when I race my truggy I have not had to replace a thing on it for over 30 tanks of fuel with includes 3 or 4 racing days. apart from bearings which is common to all kits. and the truggy still goes all the same places as the savage.

This is just my personal preference and should be taken into consideration as much or as little as you want

Thanks everyone for all the advise. I think I will go with the Savage. If I decide I do want to race I may just buy another and keep the Savage to play around with.

good idea. My savage is a great allrounder. theres not alot of places it can't go. But if your looking at a racer would def get a buggy/truggy. Saying that you could always do what i've done and stick a savage motor in a buggy.:p:

I would say go with traxxas and when u get your truck home take it apart and then rebuild it. Then you know how the truck works and understand it better but you will have a good reliable platform.

Dude can you make any suggestion other than Traxxas? Really?Ok the Savage kit is pretty good and it is not bad to put together. Also the Ofna Jammin Pro kits are great too.

If you're not averse to actual gas, you might want to consider the HPI Baja 5b SS kit. It's a larger 1/5 scale model kit. They are excellent buggies and are as fun to run as well as build.

Well i only have traxxas i sujest it because i have it. but i have just been turned on to team assciat sc10 short course truck I'm about to buy one and i would recomend that as well but i can't recomend something if i havnt used it or tryed it out you know.
