I started breaking in my new Savage last night - ran 2 tanks through no problem, them my glow starter died - anyway, left it to charge overnight and got back to break in today -problem is I can get the car started but it only idles for 10-30 seconds and then dies and certainly wont tolerate any throttle. Glow plug is glowing OK - anyone any suggestions. Thanks

It may be set really lean, richen it up a bit. Also try really lightly touching your throttle. they can be like that even if they are a bit cold, it should smarten up once its warmed up. But it sounds like its a bit too lean, I would turn your high speed needle counter-clockwise half a turn and try it.

Do you have to give it throttle to start it? that would mean its rich, but it sounds like its lean.

I'm assuming its not lean as it is producing copious amounts of oil and smoke through the exhaust. Is it possible I have a duff plug?

If your engine is running your plug should be ok. If you are burning your eyes out with the smoke, I would suggest leaning it out, it may be loading up with too much fuel at idle and then stalling out.

While the engine is running, it doesn't run for more than 30 seconds and dies immediately when I squeeze the throttle. Is it normal for the factory setting to be far too rich?? Also temperature outside is approx 8 degrees celsius.

Yeah I'm having the same problem with you Burt 25. I ran it on 2 tank fulls of nitro and it was still turning off. But i just tried and tried. When i took the glow plug ignitar out it stayed on for about 5 seconds longer then turned off. Kept on restarting it and then gave a little throttle and it was off! But then 3 minutes later it suddenly turned off which really sucked and i assumed it was flooded because it sounded like it had been. The only thing is with mine its not brand new. Its 1 year old and haven't ran it since because i couldn't be stuffed.

Your engine will load up with fuel when left to idle for too long causing it to stall out. If you need to keep the engine running longer than 10-15 seconds at idle, blip the throttle slightly to help clear fuel out of the carb.

If it dies immediately after you give it throttle from a fresh startup, it is running too rich. Since you are still on the break in tanks, lean out the LSN slightly until you can give it throttle without stalling.

Also read this guide on how to break your engine in for maximum potential.

Well, I got a new OS glow plug this afternoon and after fitting it was able to successfully get the engine to idle without stalling, still stalled however on applying throttle so I leaned the Low and High needles slightly and hey presto! There's no way my truck would have run on factory settings - is this typical or is it largely dependant on ambient conditions, fuel etc?

Typically the factory settings are quite rich. It is expected that during the break-in process you will begin to lean your fuel settings. Engine tune also depends on ambient settings. In cooler weather you'll run your mill richer, and in warmer weather expect to run leaner.
