well i got a new MGT 4.6 and done my break-in today. The weather was in the upper 40's so it was pretty chilly out still..i followed a guide i found on the web and think all went well..1st tank 1/4 throttle (factory needle settings, rich rich rich) get temp up to 190-200 (i had to put a paper towel around the head to get the temp up since it was so cold out.) then let it sit at BDC for 15 minutes..2nd tank the same except go 2-3 seconds at 1/2 throttle and get temp up around 190-200 again..3rd tank, turn High speed jet 1/8 turn clockwise to lean and run 3/4 throttle and get temp up to 200-215..4th tank, 1/8 turn again on HSN, short bursts at full throttle get temp 205-220. truck sat with piston at BDC for 10-15 minutes between every tank..

My question is, am i now ready to try to "tune" the motor? I have not touched the Low speed or the idle screw. They are set at factory settings and the High speed needle is 1/4 to a 1/2 turn leaner than the factory settings. I am getting smoke and it is using the fuel FAST so i assume i am stll very rich..lots of oil on the rear A's and dripping from the exhaust..truck seems to "load" up in the low to mid speed range..My guide stopped after the last tank so i guess i need to know what you guys would do next...This thing is great...who would have thought that a 33 year old guy could have sooo much fun with a new toy :-) any and all responses appreciated..

Lean your LSN about 1/8 of a turn and run another couple of tanks through it. I don't like to go from break in to "Race", but rather ease it out of the break in range and for almost a gallon, tune it a hair at a time.

temp?

whats the ideal temp range i should be looking for?

So when I posted that I went from break-in to 150mph in the folowing tank, you must have been shaking your head Rolex eh?
Who knew??

idle screw setting among other questions:

Is there a guage or anything that is used to set the idle gap on the carb? i know it says .020" for my truck but how/what do i measure that with??

I ran the truck again today and the settings are at pretty much factory settings with teh LSN being an 1/8th leaner. Truck does not want to idle long and is hard to get going, really have to feather the throttle until i get in the upper band of power..then when applying break and coming to a complete stop. the idle seem to be really high and it seems to take a while for the motor to "wind" down and it never really comes to a low idle...should the idle be set to where the truck is just on the verge of starting to roll or should it really be quite a bit lower..sorry for all the questions..just trying to do things right to start with..

thanks
Chad

If it doesn't wind down it's a symptom of the LSN being too lean. Richen it 1/8 turn and then do the pinch test:

Squeeze the line next to the carb.

If it cuts out, just plain dies, before 4 seconds, richen it 1/8 turn.

If it speeds up a little then dies after 6 seconds, lean it 1/16 turn.

That should get you set right.

Sounds like Cupooterluvr hit the nail on the head. I would certainly start there. Good advise.
