So I just got a new tranny in the mail today and upon inspection I noticed that when I rotate the output shaft that the gears stick a little in two spots, sort of like a tight gear mesh but only in the two spots,is that normal for a new tranny? Or should I send it back, also there is one screw missing which leads me to beleive it has been opened,

I might be wary. My tranny also has a tight spot when I spin the input shaft AND I know that I have a burred tooth on a gear. Plus the missing screw raises a few questions. Maybe it was rebuilt? Was it sold as new?

You could buy the missing screw from your lhs. You shouldnt have to if its brand new, but you could. I would open it up and take a look.

Was it from a chop shop, if the screw could be missins from where the air filter hanger is mounted
If its binding id pop it open and have a look, worst case if its stuff you can send it back

Yes it was sold as new, looks that way as well,.
Getting a screw is as easy as opening my parts box no biggie,
I haven't had the chance to rip it apart but will do tomorow, been busy hunting trophy pike, musky,I'll let u guys know what I find inside.

Pull it apart and look at the innards then see if anything is stripped. Yes let us know.

I bought a brand new Tranny from Tower and it had the First to Second gear clutch spring complety closed so it just stuck in first gear until I adjusted it. Took me a time to get it adjusted properly. Then I converted the new tranny to forward only gears and had to readjust it again.

So I popped it apart and have not found anything with my eye that could be causing the gears to stick,I am going to take a toothbrush and brush all the gears,I'm thinkin there's probably a little piece of something stuck in the bottom of a tooth somewhere.

When putting the tranny back in the use a strip of paper to mesh the Spur to the Clutch gear. This will eliminate the spots where the spur gear has imperfections and still provide a fairly tight mesh. I like to feel the play afterwards buy holding the clutch bell and moving the spur gear and have had to adjust it again on a few occasions.

I actually never Use the paper trick and always do it by feel, just like a chain on a saw or bike, all by feel, and just about never strip plastic spurs, but for someone who hasn't aquired that feel the paper trick is great

Yup the free wheel and feel works great than I can see you know how to perfrom it. I suggest it for a beginneer and it is the best for them.
you never know a persons abiltiy until they let you know :)

Yeah, I've noticed that a lot of guys get all pissed because they feel insulted that someone is teling them something they already know,...but we Dnt know what someone knows untill that someone has told us what they know,..ya know,...anyway I haven't been home much and the tranny is apart,so after I awake from a long nap and go through my rituals today"sunday" I am gunna clean the hell out of the tranny and hope it works,..ill get back at ya guys in the pm.

Brushed all the gears down and tightened the set screw for the input gear"it was wobbling on the shaft a little" and put it back together, and it's Still getting a tight spot! It's not real bad but its noticeable and that's enough to irritate me,I Dnt know what else to try,I checked the bearings and they're all nice,..also I can't get the gears to catch when I have the halve of case off so I really can't see what is catching

Maybe one of the gears was molded a little out of round? After all when they a re produced in mass quantity, a percentage is bound to be defective. Maybe one just slipped through production.

I agree with you on that bud, think I'm just gunna run it,I only paid 20$ for it brand new so what the hell,I can always pickup a new gear set for pennies.

Like you said just run it and don't sweat it much. Maybe the gears will wear into each other and smooth themselves out.

Ya know what,.. for all we know there all like that when new
