Hello from SE Ohio all. Very new to RC (thanks to donation from brother) so i have a Traxxas. i wish i could tell you more but that is where i need your help because he can't give me any information. I have not got the slightest of clues just what i got lol. I figured i would start off with some detailed pics for everyone and go from there. As of right now it does not run and nothing happens when i turn it on, but, it does crank. so hey, I'm making head way in this free venture thus far right lol. I will start asking questions once i know what it is i have and i can educate myself a bit more, so when i do ask i can be a bit more specific so i can help you help me.

Glad to be here everyone and thank you for all your help in advance. I'm sure I'm about to have a blast!!!!!

Anything else i can add that would help, just let me know. i will do what i can.

That is an old Traxxas Nitro Rustler with the Pro .15 engine.
Here is the product page for the Nitro Sport, which is the same as the Pro .15 Nitro Rustler.

First thing I would do to get it running is this.
New batteries for the TX/RX, new fuel, fuel line, air-filter, glow plug, clean out any old crud in the fuel tank & make sure the fuel tank lid has a good seal in it.
Then make sure the servo's work like they're supposed to and the rubber header to exhaust boot isn't cracked, reset the mixture needles.
Did you get the EZ start box/wand with it? If you did not you will need one or to get a pull starer & glow igniter.
If this is your first nitro, keep the ez start till you have tuning down.
For the HSN::
Turn the high-speed mixture screw clockwise, by hand, until it stops(Do not tighten or the needle may be damaged).
Now, turn the mixture screw counter-clockwise 2 1/2 complete turns.

For the LSN::
To get the low speed mixture into the correct range of adjustment, turn it in or out until the head of the screw is flush (even) with the end of the throttle arm assembly.
This will be the starting point for future adjustments.

These needle setting should be sufficient to get it started, once started & up to operating temp you will have to tune the engine from there.

Once fueled put your finger over the exhaust pipe outlet & crank the engine over till you see fuel go up through the lines & make it to the carb, then remove you finger & start the engine & tune it once warmed up.

+1 on Nitro's post, that is just about everything to get ya started. The HSN (hi speed needle is on top of the carb and the LSN (Low speed needle) is on the carb slide (opens and closes the for fuel). Thats a great looking chassis too!

Thank you!!!!!

Nitro, Thanks for all the great information. I have been reading and looking all morning at the exploded views and familiarizing myself for when i begin to work on it. I will make sure i keep everyone up to date on my progress. Thanks for the help :first_place:

The LAST thing you want to do is start it. Check back with us before you do that. If something isn't right you can blow the engine or have a runaway that will hurt you or someone else.
Just keep us posted on your progress and we'll have you SAFELY running.

I know you just got it but I would highly recommend ditching that am radio system because you're just asking for trouble. Very un reliable and very prone to inferference which could lead to a runaway. If you like the traxxas radio you could upgrade to the 2.4 system for a fee or you can get a 2.4 system for under a 100 bucks. Also you can look up a lot of YouTube videos for reference. Welcome to the hobby and enjoy.

Or you can do what Rolex does and get on your hands and knees pushing the truck with your hand while yelling vroom vroom. Ohh wear white gloves so as not to ruin the wax finish :hehe:

Update!

After spending the weekend reading, watching, etc. This is what i have found "visually" wrong and will be replacing before going the next step with my "new to me" rustler.

1. batteries have been left in car too long and corrosion is present on terminals.
2. fuel line (hosing) starting to dry rot
3. gasket around fuel cell lid
4. wiring from the ON/OFF switch to receiver seems to be stretched really tight.( so may replace to avoid possible shorts later on).

thanks for the help so far everyone, will begin to clean up and replace soon and give more updates. :)

Check ebay, they have RC chop shops that part out new vehicles and most of the time they're cheaper. I picked up a new tank with fuel lines and heat shield for around $7 shipped.

Congrats on the Rusty though, I have one and its my go to basher and I'm piecing together another one out of my spare parts. They're extremely easy to work on and cheap to fix, unless you're like me and break your engine's case twice.

Here are a couple tanks with lines, 1st 2nd. I didn't really start comparing prices but I'm pretty sure these are going to be about the cheapest new ones.

I have never had any problems with those older transmitters and receivers, but if you want a Traxxas 2.4 system let me know, I have a new one that I will let go for real cheap. I don't like it because it does not have the throttle or steering trim like the older one that you have. I bought a truck that had it and actually took it out and replaced it with the older set up like you have. I have several of those older ones and as long as you are not running with anyone with the same crystal you wont have any problem, I keep a box of different crystals just for that reason. Just remember to extend the ant. on the transmitter or it will get out of range quick. Good luck! :)

That's just not true. AM type radios are ALWAYS prone to interference. This is why FM, PCM and later 2.4 GHz radios came out. Anything from an electric razor to a power line transformer could cause a truck with an older radio to take off for parts unknown for no apparent reason.

Completely agree with hamz..I will add that these days with all the extra rf interference I wouldnt even think of running with the oldschool rx/tx

I guess I have been lucky then, I have 2 Revos, a Tmaxx and a Slayer with the exact same radio and have never had any issues, but I do live in the mountains where there isn't any radio interference. I run my trucks out in a old sand and gravel pit that is about twenty miles from anyone. The only time I have ever had mine take off is when the receiver battery went dead on one of my Revos, it took off and ended up in a creek.

With the avaliblilty of cheap multi car capable 2.4ghz radios today there's no reason to still be running an old glitchy AM TX/RX.

Not saying you can't run one, but there's nothing more agrivating then puttin a bunch cash into my to truck, to then see an exsplosion of parts when the AM glitches and the truck finds the imovable object.

update

thanks to shrode and nitro for the parts list, Fuel cell, and battery box with on/off switch has been ordered and is on its way. once received and i can know if all servos are in working order i will go from there. :)

Keep an eye on those chop shops for things to add to your order. Some of them will charge shipping for one and then anything else ships for free or a reduced price. I was able to get a spare rx pack for $5 when I added it to an order.
