new to nitro. i have a few questions, please help.

I just bough my friends redcat shockwave. he said everything on it ran fine and everything but he has not ran the rc in a couple of years. is there anything you would recommend me do before I try starting it up? I was thinking about tearing the motor down and cleaning it. should I do something with the carb? I am willing to put the time and everything into the work.
(I am going to get a new remote receivr and glowplug before I try starting it up.) please respond. thanks.

Here is list of things I go through when I purchase a used rig no matter what condition it is in.

1. Check all the servo's for proper working condition
2. Make sure your throttle is opening and closing all the way!
3. Check all screws to make sure they are secure and tight, if any are missing
4. Go over the engine I would recommend tearing it down and cleaning then sealing it completely.
5. Always start off with a new glow plug installed before even trying to start it.

If your servo's are working properly and you just want to test the engine put some fuel and a new plug in her and see if it fires up to test the engines compression.
 
from what I see he had drained the gas out of it but I wuldnt know if he did before it sat or he just drained it before I bought it from him. but shouldn't matter to much since I will be tearing it down and cleaning it lol. any more advice for me?
 
+1 Its good advice to open up your engine and see whats going on inside it.
My recent used truck purchase was missing a header bolt, header gasket was gone, cooling head screws were loose, and the top of the piston was nearly black from running too lean. Not to mention thick fuel goo in the crankcase.
I learned a lot about the previous owner from a simple inspection.
Get to know your rigs inside and out, it will help eliminate existing problems and help you easily diagnose any future problems should they occur.
