Hey everyone I just picked up a used Savage X 4.6 yesterday a friend of mine had it but decided to get rid of it to buy his son a dirtbike. Dont know much about it this is the first HPI product i have owned. I have owned T-Maxxes for years and currently have a 4908 that I bought last year (love it by the way). So i get the thing home and after some effort with the pull start the big 4.6 fired right up. can't tell you how the truck performed because the spur gear stripped after about 5 minutes of running it. I didnt even get it up to operating temp. The truck needs a good cleaning so i will wait on getting a new spur and try it again in a few days but so far i am happy with it it seems really well built and looks hard to break i plan on bashing the crap out of it so I will see how it holds up. I'm sure I will have plenty of questions in the future.

Nice truck, and they ARE tough. Sounds like your buddy sold you the truck with the spur/CB alignment out of wak, that sucks. But anyway once you get a new spur on it and properly mesh the gearing you will be able to really wind it out. Let us know.

Yeah it is nice but as with all used things its gonna need a little work i was going over it this morining and noticed several screws missing from the chassis in front and back and one broken screw. no biggie i will have her up and running really soon and can't wait to see what she'll do!!

Okay upon doing further research on my used Savage i have discovered that it isn't a 4.6 it is in fact a Savage X with a 4.1. So my question is any suggestions on what to upgrade on this beast? Upon looking it over the thing looks to be built like a tank. I will be picking a new spur gear up Wed. probably get an extra while i'm at it. Is the 4.1 a good motor? Since this is my first HPI product I'm not to familiar with them. Anyway any input would be greatly appreciated. I was out running my T-Maxx today and I'm just dying to get the Savage up and running and see what she will do!!!

The 4.1 is what I started out with. The engine ran flawless for me but I'm not happy when there is a bigger motor available so I retired it and bolted in a K5.9. My 4.1 I got about 10gal of fuel through it without an issue but again I haven't been in the R/C world for 100yrs so it is just my experience. It is still wrapped up and will be a good 'extra' if I ever need.

Make sure you have alum. diffs on it. That was big for me. Also an upgraded brake system if he hasn't already. Other than that and your spur I can't think of much else that it REALLY needs. A hump pack batt. would be a good addition as well.
That all should get a you rock solid truck.

+1 on the hump (rechargeable) battery suggestion.

If you are still using the AM controller, at a minimum get yourself a failsafe.

Your best bet is to upgrade to a decent programmable controller (FM or 2.4) which has a failsafe, but that costs...

My original Savage came with an HPI SF-1 servo for the throttle/brake as well as an HPI SF-2 steering servo.
Both sucked at their tasks.
If your Savage has this configuration, buy a good strong steering servo (200 oz if possible) and use the SF-2 as your throttle/brake.

I just broke in my new SavageX4.6...Tuned it fairly lean..I get blue smoke at 75-85% throttle..BUT i cannot get through a full tank of gas without it shutting down from what I assume is getting too hot....IS THIS NORMAL????

Gah I want a savage bad! Lets see some pics!:marshall:

Well I'm in luck on the hump pack its a venom 5 cell 1200 mah that's already installed. I also got 3 glow ingnitors with the the deal and a charger. This may be a stupid question but how do you recharge the glow ignitors? The charger i got with the truck has two wires coming off of it. A red and black one that is for the hump pack and a solid black wire that has a plug on it. I assume you would use this to recharge the ignitors but i think a piece is missing. My ole lady is bringing her digital camera over tonite so i will try to get some pics posted to give you guys a better idea of what i'm talking about.

Haha sweet, and about your cable issue wondering whats what and maybe a missing piece, throw up a pic

No man you did real well got a truck and a cell phone charger in one! Haha

Geez that is the original body, has it been a shelf queen for the better part of it's life or has he just replaced the body with stock every time? Looks like your almost good to go. Just grab a glow start charger.

As far as i know its the original body. I got three golw igniters with the truck two of which have meters on them and they both have a full charge. I'm gonna check on a charger today when i go pick up my spur gears. If it was a shelf queen it wont be anymore LOL. it has a few missing screws in the chassis side plates and one broken one so it had been used I'm just not sure how much. I'm pretty sure i can pick some screws up at True Value for pretty cheap. I hope to have this beast rippin and tearin some a$$ this afternoon. Oh and the charger i did get with it will charge my hump pack so its not completely useless!

That's not a bad deal at all. You even got a few extras. Good deal:D!!!

Now as far as upgrades, TGL was right. If you still have the stock servos in CHANGE THEM! I would use the HPI SF-2 as my throttle servo and get a powerful high torque steering servo. I have a JR Z590 in my Savage. Since you are getting a new spur gear you may want to consider getting a steel spur for heavy bashing.

If your friend has any more trucks he wants to rid himself of let me know! :hehe: Welcome to Savage-land and Happy bashing!

Thanks for the welcome and the advice but I'm sorry to say its gonna be a little while before I get this bad boy up and running. The hobby shop didnt have the spur in stock so i decided to start tearing the truck down to give it a good cleaning. I found one of the ears broken off of the backplate of the motor. Curiosity got the best of me so tore the motor apart. Well long story short she's gonna need a new mill. There were three big gouges in the side of the piston, pockmarks all over the top of the piston and big deep gouge in the crankshaft. My only guess is that somone ran this thing a time or two without the air filter on it. Oh well I bought the truck expecting that the engine was shot or probably close to it. Guess i'll have to upgrade to the 4.6 i could replace the 4.1 but the 4.6 is only $40 bucks more at rc planet so for now I'll just have to run my T-MAXX until I get the new motor ordered probably next week. I'll keep ya'll posted on the project.
