Hi All

So just got this engine new last saturday and broke it in by idle for 5 tanks, then drove it easy for about 3-4 tanks, and now just driving it normal and trying to tune it. (newbie dad and son, just got into nitro rc)

I've tried finding the sweet spot on the HSN and seems like I have just not 100% sure... and haven't found any increased takeoff performance messing with the LSN.. go lean revs high, go rich sputtery... so a mid point seems to run better.

It's currently got the original 2 speed (3 speed on its way :)) but this two speed wont shift right with WOT only if gradually work up accelleration... have tried the clutch tension screw.

So... I'm hoping maybe someone with this same engine would provide some info on tunning this engine... maybe HSN and LSN turn counts that you have after break in, or any other tuning info would be great.

I can't seem to get it to be more responsive and cannot get it to do wheelies.

Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Truck Info:

- Savage 25 converted to X
- 49T plastic spur gear
- Original clutch bell gear?? Shoes seem new.
- 20% Monster Trinity fuel

I saw some videos on Youtube and most of them have 18/47 gearing. That may help.

I was gonna use this same engine, I got it for $80 shipped new, but the one I received was a non-pull start. Didn't want to pay $70 plus to convert it.

Thanks for the reply.

What do you mean by 18/47 gearing... how is that changed?

Thanks for the reply.

clutch bell gear and spur gear?

18T clutch and 47T spur gear.
but not sure if this is the right gearing,it seems like you will have to practice a bit

I'm getting a modded LRP as well, currently being modded, and I just put in 3 speed today, can't wait to post up some videos.

it may take more than 3-4 tanks to break it in. The axial .28rr i am running didn't really make power until after 1 gallon was through it.

My LRP28S3 didn't loosen up and throw down power until about tank 9-10. However, there was enough power at tank 7 to mess up my two speed on my aftershock.

Around a gallon, it really came to life.

5 idle tanks seems really excessive. That can put a lot of strain on things.

Since you did 5 idle tanks and 3-4 run/tune tanks (I don't use that method), I'd continue running/heat cycling it for another 8-10 tanks. Then if it isn't starting to come to life, I'd look at the tune or something wrong with the trans/slipper/clutch or possibly engine. When I broke mine in, I ran tank one pretty rich, but drove it around gently to try and get the temps up. I didn't hit 200F until tank 3 or 4 though and to do that, I had to lean it out quite a bit from stock. I didn't consider mine "runnable" until about tank 12. But I tuned it mildly to keep temps within 200-240 from tank 3 on. Even at tank 12, it was still quite a bit weaker and less punchy than it was around 3/4-1 full gallon.

I just finished installation of another LRP28S3 in my savage. I liked the one so much in my aftershock, it only made sense to get a second.

I currently have the 3-speed trans with 16/49 gearing. I have an 18T bell, but couldn't get it to fit with the 49T spur I have. I'll more than likely drop the spur down to 47 at the very least in the near future. If this engine performs anything like my other, I know it will pull tall (fast) gearing, but considering I run in grass almost always, too tall of gearing can overload the clutch and slipper and cause premature failure, even if the engine can push it.

EDIT:
I ran about 10-11 tanks through my LRP in my savage today for break-in and some general running as the engine loosened up. Running 16/49 gearing with 3-speed trans and 25% byrons fuel. Wheelies are ridiculous. If I don't lightly feather the throttle off the line, it ends up on it's roof. I get 2nd gear wheelies when it shifts as well with an occasional wheelie when it hits 3rd. My problem now is that my slipper slips when it shifts into second and third once it gets heated up.

I installed a MGT 150cc tank prior to break-in. The engine didn't really start performing well at all until about tank 8. By tank 13, idle smoothed out and I was easily able to tune and lower the idle for normal running.
