I have been having this problem with my savage x 4.6 since last year. When I start the truck up, its like the wheels run with the motor. When I place the truck on the ground, it cuts out. Everyone is telling me its the clutch/shoes/springs. I have replaced the clutch, installed it TWICE, and still the same thing. The clutch is installed 100% right following the owners manual. Can someone please help, I really want to get my truck working properly again!

Also, when i spin the spur gear with my finger, the wheels also move.

does it die if you hit the throttle? if it does then lean out your LSN 1/8th of a turn every time it does until it stops. I believe this happens because the engine, with a rich LSN, does not have the power to move the wheels
My savage x acts like this when the LSN is too rich.

No it doesn't die when i hit the throttle. It works 100% perfect when the tires are off the ground. The problem is definitely in the drivetrain somewhere.

If it's not your clutch - then my next thought is your idle speed maybe set too high.
Try backing that off a tad or try stronger clutch springs.

truck stalls

Are you sure you installed the clutch shoes in the right direction(when looking at the clutch assembly the open end should be to the right.

The second problem could be the bearing being froze or ceased in the cluth bell.
Whatever the problem is absolutly in the drive train.
Inspect the trans and all the bearings.
Good luck and get it going its worth it.

What "cuts out" when you set it on the ground? The engine stalls? Or the truck doesn't move when you apply throttle with it on the ground?

If you've replaced the shoes twice and the bell spins freely when the engine is out of the truck and not running, it sounds like you may have put the clutch together wrong.

You can see some installed shoe images here:

When the springs are installed properly, the shoes should be held tight against the nut that holds the flywheel on. If they move easily, then your springs aren't on right.

Yes the problem is definitely in the clutch somewhere. The clutch shoes and springs are installed on the flywheel the proper way, so maybe the problem is a bearing. Any more suggestions?

It completely dies.. Its like the clutch is engaged with the motor, so when it hits the ground, it shuts off

Then it's definitely something with your clutch, shimming of the bell or bearings in the bell.

If it was something in your trans, it wouldn't be noticed until you increased the throttle and caused the clutch ti kick in. Even then, your clutch would most likely slip and the truck wouldn't move, just smoke a lot. That's if something in the trans was locked. If it was something in your trans that was slipping, you'd still notice it as your engine would rev, the spur would spin and the truck would just sit or move very slowly.

With the engine out of the truck, does the bell spin very freely? Or does it turn hard/not at all?
