Yep, agreed. If you got the money, right now i'd say racing: X5/7.5 ---- and bashing: 7.5
Keep in mind that if your hyper21 engine is a pullstart version, it will NOT fit in an MBX-5, whereas it will be a direct fit into an MP7.5, along with any other "compact" pullstart engine - eg. that picco 26.
Reason being the X5 mounts are too low, and judging by the XR - Mugen will never make pullstart-accomodating mounts for the 5, and aftermarketers dont seem to care about making them either.
I'd say either find a non-PS engine (+staterbox) and get an X5, or stick with the 7.5 - I can attest to the fact that its a sweet car.
oh.. and as much as it makes me feel crap to see people buy my buggy for half the price - do check out ebay.
Many a time I have seen people pick up killer deals on 7.5's (and other buggies.... but 7.5's seem to be the most common), usually preloaded with quality gear too.
A friend picked up a regular 7.5 with a JP-mod SBK, XR-3, and a pair of 357/358 (kickass) servos amongst other things..... for about $470, in like-new condition.
It's not like these damn buggies wear out in a hurry anyway... mine still looks like it did a year ago... which is why ebay is a smart option.

nitroaddict - the previous Mugen buggies imo have always been second rate - to Kyosho, as well as anything that ran on a Kyosho design (Storm, Hyper7, and perhaps 9.5) as well as some other original buggies like the Crono RS01 etc.
now however, Mugen has switched to a Kyosho style design too, as well as achieving a noticeably lighter design.. I think we'll see the X5 in winning circles soon enough.

If you are going to race it's all about driving style. One thing that I really liked about my old XR is that it would hold a line better than any other buggy that I had. The choppy stuff would upset it though, so I just went to tracks that were well groomed 
.
Now with the X5, those worries are long gone. It soaks up the tracks imperfections much better than the old buggy. Jumps well, turns excellent, easier to works on and tune. The buggy is nothing like the old buggy. More like an updated Kyosho (there are alot of similarities. Plus, Mugen's have always been pretty durable. The X5 is my 3rd Mugen, and out of the 3 I have only broken 2 shock shafts (that was before I got big bores).
It is an excellent buggy that i would put right up there with the Kanai 2. Can't necessarily say it's better, but just as good IMO.
Go to your local track and see what the majority of the guys are racing. See what your LHS sells. Hopefully it won't be like mine and have absolutely zero support for 1/8 scales.

If you didnt notice, most of those arent in USA where the real talented buggy drivers are. I think USA and Japan is where the talent is so If you also noticed there is a sparse amount of japan wins too! I think they just like mugen seki becuase its like the Honda company Mugen.
Most are in aussie.:winnar:

buy the hot bodies lightning pro. it is almost indestructible. it is fast and has alot of hopups. i think that it is the best bargin for the buck without the bargin in power and parts. i got mine for $340. - the radio

Whatever you do, go out to your LHS first. See what they have available. Bring a notebook and write down all the buggys that they stock parts for. Next, find the closest track and head out there on race day. Ask around and see what everyone else thinks. Look at the cars perform on the track and see what hop ups they have. The worst thing you can do is spend $500 bucks on a car that is hard to get parts for and that wont perform well at the track.
