Josh, NASCAR is just evolving into a dull showcase of a few superstar drivers, and the rest are just a bunch of obstacles. Even though they implemented the Car of Tomorrow to be a more cost equalizing solution, the same 4 owner sit atop the board all the time. If you're not racing for Hendricks/Rousch/Gibbs/Childress, then the chances of you winning are pretty slim. The competition is getting thinner. The racing is less exciting. The days of huge packs at Talladega and Daytona appears gone. Repaving Bristol took all the bumper cars appeal away. Places like Vegas and California are marked by one car with a huge lead all day. And then we deal with the Chase which has given one driver 5 titles in a row which would have been impossible with the old system.
In an attempt to make NASCAR more appealing, they have destroyed it. Attendance is down. Revenue is down. The racing is less exciting. It has outgrown itself. I believe it's time for Formula 1 to push harder into the North American market. Or perhaps bringing WRC here for a few events. And I'd love to see something like the Australian Supercars to develop here in North America. Those are becoming far more entertaining forms of racing with far less predictable outcomes. Well..except for F1 which is usually won in qualifying and Vettel is the odds-on favorite every week. But it's still awesome to watch.

I absolutely HATE the new format for Talladega and Daytona, that two car pod crap is boring as hell! I miss the big 200 mph packs, that was exciting to watch. About the only races really I look forward to anymore are the short tracks, I'm tired of all the 1.5 mile cookie cutters tracks too. I wish they would build a new short track and drop some of the cookie cutter tracks. I also agree on the Chase, no way in hell does asshat48 win 5 in a row with the old format. I remember the days of every race at every track being sold out, now when you watch, there are quite a few empty seats. We all have to face it though, the big Bill era is gone, the new era has lost a good portion of it's original fan base because of all the stupid changes, and Nascar will never be as good as it once was.

As far as F-1, I'm not really a fan, so I have no real opinion about F-1

I would love to see the Nascar Wheelin Modified tour on tv regularly, or at all, lol. I love asphalt modifieds. I can't wait for the season to start out at Riverhead this month!

I've been noticing this lack of competition for a little while now and I honestly have started to become less interested in the Nascar racing. F1 has turned into my favorite series and ALMS is IMO an underrared series. I'm planning 100% to be in Austin in 2012 and I'm going to Lime Rock Park this summer. No Nascar race plans this year.

You know Jeff you're really right on the money here. Four car teams and the COT were supposed to help even out the field and create competition throughou. I'm gonna take a closer glance at race finishes at other tracks and see what affect if any we've seen at other small to mid sized tracks. Actually all of them cuz I seem to recall noticing this trend at the 2 milers as wel.

Just because I had to nerd it out, here's the rundown of team victories in 2010:

Gibbs: 28.9%
Hendrick: 18.4%
Rousch: 14.3%
Childress: 13.2%
Earnhardt/Ganassi: 10.5%
Stewart/Haas: 7.9%
Penske: 5.3%
Petty: 2.6%
Michael Waltrip: 2.6%

I omitted the Bud Pole Shootout and the All Star race because complete fields were not run. I did use the winners of the Twin 150's as all cars got a chance to run in one or the other.

No other teams had a victory in 2010.

Yawn.....

I don't really take much issue with thebig teams winning as I do with small teams not being able to compete in relative form. IMO winning is kind of a different level as just being competitive. Its not that there isn't competition at the back if the field, its just that the back if the field is REALLY at the BACK OF THE FIELD.

My contention is similar. All the names have been the same over the past number of seasons. Every week it's more or less the same group fighting it out. There are a number of drivers that I like who will most likely not see that kind of attention unless they finally break into a big team. Keselowski. Regan Smith. Allmendinger. I'd like to see Nationwide guys like Justin Allgaier and Jason Leffler break through. But I don't see it happening. NASCAR I believe is making sure all the big ticket guys stay on top. Though it may be padding their pockets with cash, it's making the series predictable and dull as hell.

Ok. I know I bitched about the racing. But I do want to take a moment to congratulate Regan Smith on his first victory. He's from only a few miles from my hometown and everyone up here is proud of the kid. Good job!

And I hope Harvick totally beats down Kyle Bush.

What an ending. Kyle Busch wrecked 3 cars in the last 5 or so laps..?..I'll second the beating.

I'll third the beating!

Great to see Regan win! Nice change from one of the multi car teams to a single car team, and a drivers first cup win. Congrats Regan!

I never expected Regan on his old tires to be able to hold Edwards off like that. He really showed his skills last night, and I don't think thats the last we will be seeing of him.

Smith needs the bump to a big team. Unless Furniture Row feels like they can keep giving him enough support to keep him running at the front each week. He's one of the young talents that the series needs. And am I the only one that thinks the 78 car looks like it was painted with housepaint? They have their one win. Time to spring for some flashier wraps, guys!

I totally missed the race. Kind of upset at myself for that. Darlington is my favorite track. Glad to see Smith win one. It's been coming, but I didn't see ithappening so quickly this season. Good for him! At least I remembered to record Istanbul this morning :)
