The phoenix kit i ordered finally came in! I'm still waiting on a lot of the parts for the build, but i thought id start a thread in preparation anyways!
I really wanted to do a straight axle phoenix build, but i emailed vanquish and they said they do not currently have plans to bring that kit back. So… i thought, screw it! Ill make my own and sell off the parts i dont use!
Anyways, here is a list of what I've ordered for the build:

Stuff i have:
-phoenix portal kit
-vanquish rear F10 straight axle kit
-powerHD TR-4 servos for dig and o/d
-injora 1.9 wheels in a bronze finish (not new)
-proline 1.9 predator krawlers (not new)
-flysky gt5 radio and 6ch reciever

Stuff in the mail:
-HW fusion pro 2300kv
-vanquish front F10 straight axle kit
-incision s8e 90mm shocks
-incision 56t spur gear
-jx 46kg direct power servo for steering

Stuff i have to make or obtain or decide on:
-light kit
-mounts for micro servos
-paint colour(s)

Stoked to do another build over the holidays, unfortunately some of the parts I'm waiting on are stuck in limbo due to a canadian postal strike that is going on. Hopefully that ends soon and the rest of my goodies arrive safe and sound!

I built one of those a couple years ago and it was a fun build. I love the body style and how much you can do with that twin VFD. I used some full sized eco power servos from amain hobbies, and set it up for Dig, overdrive, freewheel, and rear wheel drive. Enjoy your build! There is fun to be had!

I'm a little unsure how the micro servos will do for the shift functions on this truck. I know lots of people use higher end micro servos no problem, but havent seen any builds with a more budget offering.
I was originally going to get savox budget low pro servos, but decided to go this route to save a bit of weight. I've used one of these tr4 servos for dig on my capra for years with no issues, so hopefully my plan works!

I have a Hitec HS-70MG Ultra Torque Micro servo handling the shifting duties in our Ryft, which has a massive transmission it it, and it handles that shift fork like a champ. Not sure if it will fit, so you'll have to check the specs.

There's really not much load on the shift mechanisms of most RC's, as long as you set them up right and get your endpoints set correctly. So you don't need anything too crazy. Just make sure your endpoints are set so the servo isn't pushing too far on the fork which would keep a constant load on the servo. If you set it correctly, the servo will have the fork in gear with no load on it at all really.

So far I'm pretty sure ill be having the portal axles and stock wheels and tires up for sale.
I'm going to keep the 80mm shocks i think and try them out on this truck and maybe my capra even to see if it likes being even lower

I don't think they'll be for sale long 😆

Postal strike is over for now!
Parts are starting to roll in again!!
Recieved the steering servo last night, and tracking shows the front axle, shocks and some other stuff should be in on monday!!!
Still no news on the fusion pro…

My second HW order that I placed on the 3rd just showed up yesterday. But that was due to Indy distribution moving to a new facility which created a huge mess along with a week+ backlog. And in the confusion somebody shipped my package to the wrong destination, which took 10 days to return.

Got the axles, shocks and tires swapped out of the box. Loaded all the electronics into the box and wrapped it up for xmas.
Told my wife to say its from her, a gift to me and my boys! That made her happy, and you know what they say about a happy wife!
Now to act surprised tomorrow morning!! haha

If anyone needs some portal f10 axles or wildpeak tires, shoot me a pm!

Making progress!
So far no issues with instructions or parts.
A little disappointed that the straight axle f10’s dont come with brass inner tubes, while the portals do. Obviously to add strength to the portal housing, but cmon!
There is the most minor clearance issue with the rear link mount vs fusion pro, but i had read about this previously on the web, no big deal!

Well i managed to convince the kid to put in a bit more time on the rig before his bedtime.
Hung the axles from the chassis before calling it for the night!
Went with the 56t spur to account for the straight axle swap, as well as 90mm shocks instead of the supplied 80mm units for the portals
Everything is as smooth as eggs so far,
Although getting the seal cartridge snap ring out was a bit fiddly, but hopefully installing seals after the shock shaft is in will help the shocks not leak.
Went with 35w in the shocks.
Didnt need any shims on the pinion side of the driveshafts to get the gear mesh smooth, we’ll see after a bit of run in.
Happened to have a 20mm servo horn on hand that just barely fits without hitting panhard.

Hold up. Ya got a few nits going on. Look at the bottom of your shock mounts; the shocks have a pivot ball insert that is asymmetrical, in that one side is longer than the other. The photo above, the passenger rear is correct, but the driver rear is reversed. Remove that screw and flip that around 180 degrees. You want your shocks bottoms to be out slightly from the top. This way when the axle compressed on one side, the shaft is moving in a straight line and not binding the shaft against the plastic guides inside the shock. I think one of your fronts are reversed as well.

A little laptop/3d printer time. Made some servo mounts to run the powerHD micro servos for dig and overdrive. Tried to get them as tucked in and forward as i could.
Also designed a receiver box up front by the steering servo. Really fits the flysky receiver nicely dropped down into the winch servo hole.
Everything is printed in petg-cf on a old ender3.
Next up is a battery mount, I'm going to run the battery in the stock location-ish. 3600mah pack is the largest i run in my crawlers, and I'm sure i can optimize the location a bit given the smaller pack.

Still need to fire all the electronics up and center the servo’s. Hopefully tonight.
Also will make up some matching links for the od and dig at some point.
