RC Driving Style
Hey guys... new to the revo's.. heck, havent even gotten mine yet. I should have it here next week and I've been reading over the forum for the last couple of days trying to understand everything.... so I have a couple of newbie questions that I'm sure are out there if I'd just search hard enough.

Ok, as *** as it sounds, I had to GOOGLE what CVD's are (still dont know) and what the primary function of servos. (Steering and throttle is what I got out of that)

Sooo my question is.. what is the purpose of faster servo's... I imagine faster throttle response?

Also, does the controller have anything to do with performance? I read a couple of posts where people recommended this or that controller... Does that really make a difference?

Generally speaking the better servo you have the happier you will be. It takes a lot of power to turn those big tires. HiTech makes an excellent servo.
BUT IMO---- dont replace anything until it breaks. If it aint broke, dont fix it.

ALSO- The revo has the ability to use dual servos, the 2070 digital is a very good servo (IMO). Just get another 2070 and use the dual set up. Probably $15

Next Transmitters- there are a ton of very good radio systems out there.
BUT- you have to decide what you want to do
If you want to race,,, then you will have to look at a 2.4 gh system.
BUT if you only want to bash then dont waste your money
The Traxxas TQ3 will be fine for back yard bashing.

Makes sense, thanks for the info. For me, I just wanna go out and play around, chase my dogs, and possibly my wife. :)
 
get extra glow plugs and spur gears and run it as it is.then as brad said upgrade when problems occur
 
Follow the break in instructions to a T. Read your manual until you understand what you are and will be doing. Like the guys said, extra glow plugs and spur gears are all you'll need for a while. You won't have anything to worry about if you follow the instructions. Don't worry about being new to rc; you'll learn fast. Don't freak out when you smoke something and the front of the rig looks wasted(not trying to bring ya bad luck, but it will probably happen more than once). Parts are pretty cheap. Remember that the throttle trigger isn't a switch and take 'er easy at first. Congrats! Revos cook!
 
Yep probably the best advice to any newbie READ THE MANUAL!! your worst enemy is not knowing your rig and take your time in the breakin as this will determine the life extent of your motor.

NBF (Not Being Funny), but i would disagree with that. I learnt quickly to ditch not only 27MHz Radio's but Also i learnt that 40MHz radios are not much of a way to go either (i have a 40MHz Futaba T2PL to prove it). Both frequencies are prone to interference spikes that can cause a run away at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) without a failsafe and with one, dependant where i ran, i would constantly be stopped by my failsafe kicking in.

IMO (In My Opinion) 2.4Ghz Radio's are not only the safest way to go, but the ONLY way to go now that i finally have experienced the hassle free running i can get without interference, plus, with SPEKTRUM radio's (not sure about other brands) you get a failsafe built into the receiver.

I switched to 2.4GHz recently, and having run nitro and electric rigs with it, i find it extremely satisfying knowing there is little probability of interference spikes. I also have not experienced a crash since, caused by an interferance spike.

So, i would DEFINATELY look at 2.4GHz, not neccesarily right now, but somewhere down the line. EVEN FOR A BASHING RIG !! the amount you put into the 2.4GHz radio, is money you WON'T spend repairing a runaway xcaused by a spike of interference on the lower MHz bands.
 
Welcome to nitro burn'n, REVO bash'n, WOT FUN!!!!! I'm new to nitro as well and my revo is my 1st LOVE (i mean rig).LOL.

I recommend buying the "ultimate nitro engine guide". It's $30 but worth the investment to learrn all about your nitro engine. That book covers everything u need to know so you will spend more time bash'n, less time scratch'n ur head say'n "WTF"!

Glow plugs are a must! Only buy Traxxas plugs, super duty long-medium is recommended.

Batteries; u can buy an rx pack for ur revo istead of burn'n up AA bat. and ur wallet. the only down side is i think it needs to be charged after every hour of use. It might be cheaper and more efficient to buy AA lithium bat. and a charger.

Fuel; Only use Traxxas Top Fuel either 10%-20%. I recommend 20%, this fuel has enuf oils to keep ur engine cool while delivering plenty of horse power! Once u have brokin in ur engine with whatever percentage fuel u buy, it is highly suggested that u do not ever change the % of fuel u used from the beginning.

LASTLY, READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING AS OTHER STATED B4! WHEN YOU GET YOUR REVO, THE MANUAL WILL SOON BE YOUR BIBLE!

thanks guys, thats really awesome advice... My revo should be here soon, and I bought my 10 year old a Raze ST... so we should have a TON of fun.

I'm a manual reading SOB, so no worries there.. Although, I think I might buy that Nitro engines book, thats gotta have some good info in it I bet.

Thunder - Is it cheaper to buy a good failsafe, and a throttle return spring, instead of dropping a ton of cash on a different controller?
 
I bought that Nitro Engine Guide book a year ago and still like it and use it. I got some good information out of it. Makes a good bathroom reader, too.

oh yeah. . .welcome to revo and rcnt i have gotten alot of useful info and alot of help from the ppl in here and if u have any questions i am 99.999999% someone else here has had the same problem or knows how to fix said problem. . .
 
A good 2.4ghz is 200 bucks a good failsafe is 30. Your choice that or you can also get fm radios that are the inbetween of am and spektrum...

Until you upgrade your radio, that's exactly what to do anyway, but i would say get a 2.4GHz radio, you get no interference and better range, plus a built in failsafe on the receiver. Also, you have a good radio for the life of your rig aswell. the Radios in the 27, -75MHz range are very prone to intrerference spikes, which is partly why the failsafe was designed. Another upside is multi model memory. I.E, you can run several differentn "Rigs" from the same radio (not at the same time though...) if they have a 2.4GHz receiver installed. (Thats also why i went spektrum). One Radio can have from 3 model memory upto 10 model memory.

If you intend to have multiple rigs, for around £35 GBP per receiver once you have your radio, it works out at a good deal. Especially when you can look at as insurance against intereference causing a WOT crash.

I Run spektrum (So Far) on 3 T/Tiger EB4's. One has cost me just about £1400 GBP so far, the other two are stock valued at £150 GBP each.

My radio cost me £60 for the handset (used) and £35 per receiver. So for £165, i am protecting 3 "Rigs" at a combined value of £1700 from ever running away from me due to interference.

So IMO, YES, it IS worth buying a good radio. Especially if you plan on more R/C Rigs in the future.

There are plenty of 2.4GHz Radio options out there. My advice would be to look around to find what you need/want from a radio, then find the best deal you can.

i've been running about 2 months now. I'm still a newbie- when it comes to why something happens Any ways i found out that for bashing you'll want A-arms and until u know how to properly tune it have lots of extra spur gears and clutch shoes cuz you'll burn them up. And i haven't had a WOT thing yet with the stock stuff
 
near term failures if you aren't careful

Few quick things to keep an eye on in a new revo. 1st..I'll say it again..read, re-read then read your manual again. Until everthing actually makes sense to you.

2nd. Tighten your wheel nuts. The aren't on there good new and if you don't, you'll watch one fly off very soon.

3rd. slipper clutch is not "broke in" either, the shoes will settle on the pins and the clutch will get loose. If you don't adjust it after you get done breaking in, chances are you'll spit out a pad. I've seen two do it so far, the second one even after warning to tighten it up.

4th. get a wing..trust me, you'll land upside down...wing is a reletively cheap roll bar and wheelie bar in one.

5th. receiver pack...even rechargable batteries will have you pulling the cover, pulling the pack and replacing more than you would care to. They also have a tendency to break contact after a hard nose or tail landing and leave you sitting stranded. (a good drop usually re-establishes contact) but a rcvr pack is much easier and puts an end to pulling the cover. side note, pay attention to how the rcvr pack hooks up. i had to pull my switch, and turn it around to operate as labeled. My revo came with the long wire to the rcvr and the short wire hanging,...the short one goes to the rcvr and the long one routed to the charger connector mount. you'll see what I mean.

6th. read, re-read and read your manual again.
