my eindecker

Cleaning up the workshop a little yesterday.
Haven't flew for about 3 years now? Got my Eindecker out and started cleaning it. Thought I would take a few pics of it.
This was the last plane I built.







Here are the specs:
Balsa USA kit. Fabric covering painted with latex house paint. Maltese crosses were cut out of vinyl, like you would put on signs.
Powered by a Saito .91.

The latex house paint worked out great. It was painted over with "nelsons clear." The front (silver) was painted with "rustoleom." Several of the guys at the field told me it was fuelproof. It wasn't. So I'll have to re-paint it. Got the cowl, but haven't got the rest of it.

What do ya think? Besides the old dude is getting a belly?

rustolium is NOT fuelproof......you can go to the auto section at wallmart & get a spraypaint called (Dupli-Color AUTO SPRAY) which is fuel/heatproof......i built a 60 size eindecker & painted using the dupli-color & is excellent for cowling paint......just dont use it on covered wings cause its not a flexable enough paint for that application......the eindecker i built with flying wires, machine gun, pilot, etc which was built from a set of pictures.......all my planes are german war planes except for the arf twist i bought just for goofing off.......now all my planes just hang from the ceilling in several rooms cause i went to nitro trucks for a while......when i get bord with that ill go back to flying again.........

Zandor, didn't realize it was that big till I looked at the pic.
That was the first pic I posted of myself. Should've dressed up and sucked in the gut.

I think 2003 was the last year I flew anything.

Been out to the field a few times and I'm starting to get a little spark back.
Not sure about flying this one. It flew great. Was just that the time invested in it makes me nervous to fly it.
I have a "wild thing" and a "BUHOR." Have to loosen up the thumbs on one of those first. They are both .40 size. Not that they flew any better, just that I didn't have a lot of time in building them.

SD, don't worry about flying something that big. They fly better than the smaller ones. Just need more room to land, if ya want em back in one piece.

Speed, I think I'll stick with the Lusterkote for now. The rustoleum is going to be a bitch to get off.
Have you ever painted one with latex? That was the first one I did.

yes i have used latex paint on silkspan covering......worked great but had to put a kote of clearkote over the latex to give it the shiny look i wanted.......all my planes are silkspan covered except for the twist which is monokote plastic film......fun plane to hemhaw around with but i like the german warbirds.......

Never used any silkspan. Most of mine has been monokoke.

I like scale aircraft. Got the Bristol M-1 from Balsa USA, and a small Tiger Moth. Both are still "on the boards." The moth needs covered. The Bristol still needs a few days of building.
Got several sets of plans. Enough wood to build about 3 or 4 planes.

Just haven't been able to get into it. Hope to come out of it before long though.

silkspan is great stuff........you cut it, dampen it some then cover the plane......when its dry it gets tighter than a drum.......

I did one of those Gullows kits with the tissue once. Wet it and then paint it with dope.
I've got a pack of silkspan... I think?
Bought it a long time ago and forgot about it. Tried it just for reinforcement. Seems like you were supposed to paint it with dope too?

Try some of Balsa USA's Solartex the next time you plan to paint one. I was scared to try a fabric covering, but it went on great. Plenty of glue and it won't let loose like monokote. No air bubbles either.
