OK so I got this Qnap TS-109 NAS for birthday this summer. All I had to put in it was a 120g Samsung drive, so there was only room for my music to be in mp3. I've just put in a 750g Western Digital Raid Edition, nice and roomy.

This week I invsted in one of these. Apple TV as this was the best option for me for playing flac files. :D Well I was thinking about a Logitech Squeezeox Duet, but it will only play audio.

I quickly hacked the a-tv with XBMC(Xbox media center) they just ported it to MacOSx. 8) Looks neat huh. :)

Looks stock except for the top menu item.

Here's how it looks in the music folder. It's also a nice cross-section of my music taste.

This is only a small portion of my CD's. There's almost 300 of them, all being converted to flac on my MacBook. Great little machine BTW. With the new touchpad you don't even miss a mouse.

There should be ample room for me to set up the NAS for Timemachine as well. Really cool feature. :D And you don't even have to buy Apples expensive Timecapsule.

I don't know any of the Buffalo products, and I'm having a hard time telling what it can do.

The Qnap I'm using works great, no RAID capability though, but they do make models that have it. Just not in my Budget. It has a unPnP server(Twonkyvision) built in, that works well with xbox360 and PS3. A SMB server that works great with the Apple TV, a iTunes server that works with itunes from you computer(you don't have to do anything to make it work, other than putting the mp3's in the right folder). The network sharing just plain works with the Mac. It's actually the easiest I've ever seen. It's avaiable from the first time you nitialize the NAS.

I'm more than happy with it. If you go for a Qnap, don't bother with the "pro" models of the TS-109 and TS-209. They only differ in that they have domain server capability, and who installing it in ones home has a need for that.

Can you access your NAS remotely?

Say to watch a movie at work that you have stored at home

I think it's capable of it. It should only be a matter of opening the right port in the router. It does have both a webserver and a ftp server.

It won't be usefull to me though(reason why I haven't tried it), as I only have 512kbit upstream.
