Mugen MBX5 Prospec Thread :)

others have also been known to take a file to the wheel to make it norrower so that it fits with just a small amount of play. there is no doubt that they coulda made the opening a bit larger, but their reasoning behind the smaller hole is that less debris will get into the chassis. it just seems too hard to get the starter box setup so that the wheel will fit just right every time w/o doing one or both mods.
 
PiErow, have you tried raising the starterbox wheel up? On mine, the motor and wheel assembly is secured in the box by screws going up through the bottom. If yours is like this, you can put some washers under the motor/wheel assembly to raise the whole rig up so it makes better contact with the flywheel.
 
Here is a pic of my Prospec. It's a little dirty, except the lid, because I painted the white with Tamiya paint, and it flaked of, so I cleaned it up a bit, and painted the clear spots yellow. I'll probably be painting a new body soon, but I figure this one will still due for a while. :cheers:

 
i have a question about castor. when you increase castor you are tilting the upper arm back, like going from the center hole bushing to the upper hole bushing in the front right?
 
I don't think so
giving more castor is sliding the upperarms backwards
this creates less off-power steering into corners and more on-power steering before or after+ stability on straight line

tilting from center hole to upperhole bushings is increasing your kick-up
creating less steering response and better handling on bumpy tracks+ weight concentrates on the front suspension on braking

in short,practicaly, if you do either of the two actions you will have a feeling of decrease in steering but also more stability

thanks, i am going to run chad bradleys boggy creek setup this weekend, and the kickup in the front is the center bushing with a 1mm shim behind the upper arm, just was not sure wich was the castor. also 2 degrees anti squat in the back. thanks again

Does this guy still paint bodies? I just sent him a message...can anyone put me in direct contact with this guy as I want to get a body painted relatively soon.
 
Man my starter box is tuff as balls. Much better than the chrome to blue bottom ofna. However now that i have the engine spinning it wont start. Would it help to heat the engine up?
 
Yeah, use a hair dryer to pre heat the engine if you live in a cooler climate. Of coarse this is after you make sure you have a good glow plug, glow plug igniter, and fuel getting to the carb. If it still won't start try putting the engine back to factory needle settings, if it isn't already.
 
Ya its getting fuel, glow plug glowing orange, and brand new never before started!

Try to find out what the factory needle settings are for your carb, and check them. Also, double check that your starter box wheel is spinning the correct direction.
 
If you have it so the front of the buggy is to your left, and the pipe is toward you sitting on the starter box the top of the starter wheel should turn towad you.
 
Ok it was spinning the other way. I will try again (to start it).
 
Check the wiring diagram for you starter box. It may just need the leads reversed on the battery, or you may have the starter motor in backwards. If that is possible???
 
Ya i just reversed the polarity on the battery. Now the box is a lot weaker. Time for the heat gun to come out!!!!!!! I hope she starts.
 
Man she fired up but wont do it again. Even with 7 amps through the starter box. I emailed o.s. I fthey tell me to send it back wich engine should i rplace it with?
I was thinking the c5 or ws72 or the new rexx.
 
how long have you had a glow charger on the plug for, you may have blown it out, not many of the engine manufacturers will take a engine back once it has had fuel in it
check everything from needle settings through to fuel lines, sounds maybe like a needle or plug problem, maybe no fuel

Just make 300% sure it's spinning the right way. Holding the front of the buggy in your left hand and the back of the buggy with your right hand, the top of the starter box wheel should be spinning towards you. These engine will fire up in reverse!! Also, charge your gelcel over night again if it's week and it would hurt to charge the glow igniter too. The heat gun is a good idea also!! Good Luck.

Not that anyone really cares, but I have a new MBX5 kit now that's almost prospec. I've got the rear hubs, the engine mount and the radio posts that are still stock. I passed my old mbx5 off to my son and purchased a spare parts buggy for both of us to share. 3 mbx5 buggies in the house now. :banana:
