Well, not exactly. Yesterday, I took the Maxx out to the street to do a few high speed runs and get the tune dialed in. I had quite a bit of blue smoke coming out at WOT, so I brought it back and leaned it out 1/8th turn. Took off for another run up and down the street, and when I brought it back to lean it out just a hair more(still a lot of blue smoke...it had gotten quite a bit hotter out since the last time I ran it), it kind of sputtered a little bit...didn't sound quite right. So I feathered the throttle just a hair, and it completely conked out on me. I thought maybe it had flooded, so I pinched the fuel line, tried to bump it over with the EZ-Start and nothing...I mean NOTHING.

It clicked once, the light on the starter went out, and that was it. I decided to let it cool, take the motor out and check the OWB. That looked great. So, a tear down was in order, and this is what I found.

Notice the con-rod. That doesn't seem normal to me. :hehe: I'm not really sure what happened here. Does it look like excessive discoloration on the sleeve and piston? I definitely don't have tuning down to a science on this 3.3(I don't think many people do...). I've always tried to run rich, but not excessively so. It doesn't look like it has overheated to me. There is no discoloration on the gasket, and the inside of the sleeve is totally smooth and about 99% consistent on coloration.

Obviously its time for a rebuild or replacement...I think I'm going to take the latter option, and end up with a O.S. .21TM. I had an O.S. .12 when I was a kid, and that thing was so easy to tune. It fired up first time, every time and held that tune like a dream. My other option is the Picco .26, but even though its less expensive, I'd end up spending more than the difference in price on broken drive-line components, haha.

More than anything, this post was just to share a little carnage...I know how everyone loves pictures.

Oh, and just one more little bit of info - the piston still slides up the sleeve quite smoothly, and has good pinch at the top. I don't think it was a seized piston that caused the con-rod to snap like that.

Any idea whether or not Traxxas would help out in this case? I'm not really concerned either way, but if they would, I'm not going to turn it down, thats for sure.

I think your on your own as far as the company supporting that problem if your were running a new engine like that without proper break in that can happen to any of them. I myself love os engines would take them over anything picco's are a pain in the ass to keep tuned.I still looks like you got lean somewere in the process.Get about 6 to 10 tanks through it before you start rippin it up.Good luck with round2!:D

Oh, the motor has been broken in. I've had this thing since 2009, I let it sit up for about six or eight months(luckily, I had the foresight to put it away properly) and finally decided to get it back out about 2 weeks ago. Now this happens. I'm not getting discouraged that easily though. ;)

At one point, I had a pretty serious air leak through the carb...the fuel intake had a hairline crack at the base of the nipple, and that is most likely when it was running lean. I had to replace the whole carb in that situation.

Sounds like those air leaks may have killed you if you buy a new one seal it up before you start using it good luck bud.:D

That rod looks like a case of fatiged metal .

Unfortunately that seems to happen quite often with those engine, although the rod usually splits in the other direction. I would go with a different engine, the OS .21 is a nice little mill.

i run alot of 900 hp big block chevys on track, most with alum. rods, have seen your pic twice, one was fact. flaw, the other was hydro lock.. send pic to manufacturer, they might warr. good luck....

i doubt they will warrenty your broken engine.

I've broken 2 3.3s. one just like yours and another because a bearing failed.
there is a very simple reason that the 3.3 breaks rods, it is nothing more than a larger piston/ sleeve put on an engine designed for 2.5 displacement.

cut your lose and try a different engine manufacturer.

Well, I'll post updates once I get the .21 in ;)

Thanks for the advice/comments, guys. I'm not sure its "good" to know that this isn't entirely uncommon, but at least I don't feel like I somehow caused my motor to have a catastrophic failure.

Well, I've got an O.S. .21tm on the way...now the hard part - waiting til Friday for it to show up.

Somethin got into my motor and scored my sleeve so I'm doing a full rebuild with this part u mentioned heck with traxxas track record it's worth the extra money

Personally I would hav went with the picco because my last O.S. was the .18 was a pain to tune cuz of the 3 needle carb plus it's an arm and a leg for rebuild so I just bought the 3.3 3 gallons later I'm rebuildin it now not cuz it blew up just cuz somethin got in the engine and scored my sleeve and piston

It mighta been dirt when you take out the plug or little rock fragments. if you dont keap the inside of cooling head clean when you change the plug sometimes the littlest thing causes the biggest problems. try a air gun to cleen head before changing the plug,

my idea on keeping a con rod from spliting is to NOT run it at top rpm more than 3 seconds.

The name of this game is is speed. The price you pay for speed. Most of us all know the truth. LEAN IS MEAN and JUST A LITTLE MORE ! Or possibly you drive like my wife " YOU STAB IT AND STEER !" :hehe:

What kind of fuel are you running? Some fuels don't have enough oil for the traxxas engines.

I have seen some serious scatter come from all motors. And yes have blown a O.S. before a little .15 just after I got into my T-maxx.
