Here's what happens when you go for the low transition and the airplane isn't quite ready to fly.
-or-
Russian MiG-29 demonstrates the weight on wheels switch on take off.

Either title, the end result is the same. This fellow decides to showboat for his distinguished guest passenger. He shoots for the low transition (meaning raising the gear while in or near ground effect). He pulls the gear up immediately on lift-off. The jet settles back down through ground effect and out of the flight regime and into the ground regime...meaning here we go a skidding down the run way.

You need something burning to make the smoke. The metal doesn't burn that easily. When it wound down and fuel was leaking somewhere it seemed as if maybe the tires or a lot of wiring went *POOF*. More than likely, thats where that smoke came from.

Either way, showboat pilots are usually the first to get shot down. JACKASS!!!!!!!! I wonder what that move cost him?!?!? Rank, job, a couple million bucks?

I'm actually kinda surprised that there wasn't more smoke than there is in the vid because you would think that all that scraping on the ground would be more than enough to make a decent sized smoke cloud.
You've been watching the movies a little too much! In real life there's generally about half as much smoke and about 1/4 as much flame as you see on TV.

I wonder why he didn't try the air brakes...;)

Good vid SkyMaxx:) I wonder if they let him fly again? or would that be slide:)

Oh MY

Did you guys notice he tried to put the landing gear back down after he was on the ground, that was funny:banana: Atleast no one was hurt:D

I noticed that, but didn't think it worthy of mention. He was screwed when he didn't have the speed to stay airborne. Ground affect is a tricky bit of air to fly in.

Speaking of taking off and such...

Do you know how fast an airplane (commerical) is going at take off?

I flew for the first time this week to and from vegas and boy buddy those things really go!

They are moving at better than 140 mph.

Commercial airliners are moving at better than 140 knots when they take off. Takeoff speed will vary from aircraft to aircraft depending on size and weight, but 140 is a good number for most large aircraft, like an airliner.
