MERV Running Hot?

So I finally got to get the new MERV outside today for a pack and really run it. i was running in grass, everything is stock including the gearing, running a single 2s 2200 lipo pack. I didn't take my temp gun with me, but my motor and ESC got hotter than I like for them to be, I could lay my finger on the can for about one second, and that's it.

That can't be normal, can it? If I gear down any lower, I don't think it's going to be enough to keep me happy, but I'm worried about damaging something. Need to take the temp gun and run it more this weekend to really confirm, but I'm hoping it's just me over reacting and that's all. MERV owners, what gearing do you guys run in grass and off road for bashing to keep the temps down?

I geared mine down a tooth on the pinion from the "speed" pinion that is included by Traxxas and recommended for LiPo operation.

I didn't even use the speed pinion, it's still in the box. I'm using the stock one.

I'm confused on the gear chart in the manual;

It states that 28/50 is stock, and to run the included 23/50 for 50+mph. I thought the smaller the pinion or larger the spur, the lower your overall gear ratio was, the lower the top speed. Do I have that backwards maybe?

Yeah, I realize it's a strain. But on the Pede, it doesn't phase it at all. I suppose the small tires have a harder time with it from a mechanical leverage standpoint.

I don't mind gearing down if I must, I just didn't think I'd have to with only 2s packs and stock gearing.

going down from a 28T pinion to a 23T will decrease your top speed, increase your torque, and lower your motor temp. You understand it right....sounds like you either read the manual wrong or they typo'd it.

I had to doublecheck, but yep, manual is dead backwards

EDIT: Just confirmed, the 23T pinion is in the box. So screw up on Traxxs' part, but even bigger on mine as I should have checked it and that's on me. I'll swap it out, and order some other pinions to try out. Thanks a bunch guys!

Well I swapped the pinion for the right one on lunch break today, hoping to get home at a decent hour from work so I can run a pack or two. Should have way more TQ and battery life now.

that chart does not specify mini anything. It may be refering to full size revo and full size slash.

either way, smaller pinion should not equal faster speed.

It specifies the model #'s 7107 is the 1/16 E Revo VXL, 7007 is the 1/16 Slash VXL.

I run 28/55 with dirt hawgs on titus beadlocks. So far so good.
