Summer of 1995 - My dad finally grew tired of his OG Tamiya Lunchbox and handed it down to me. Mechanical speed control, nicad batteries, Futaba stick transmitter...I had been driving this thing around my grandma's backyard since I was in diapers and it was now MINE...I was in heaven.

Dad saw how much I loved the truck. He also saw how much I was struggling to keep it going. The mechanical speed control was on its last leg and I blew the diff up a couple times.

I remember flipping through the RC Car Action magazines, seeing all of the HPI cars and thinking they were the tits. Only one non-HPI vehicle REALLY caught my eye...the Traxxas Nitro Sport. Looking back, I think I just liked the paint job...typical Traxxas fan boy stuff.

I mean come on...purple splashing on the red and yellow with FLAMES...dope.

I worked as a plumber's helper (Dad was the plumber lol) that summer. We did a lot of residential service work and commercial re-builds. I got to keep all the copper we removed from the jobs and take it to the scrap yard. A week before school started, we took my 3 huge bins full of copper to the scrap yard, and I made $280. That night, my parents drove me to the nearest hobby shop 1.5 hours away, and I made the largest purchase of my 8-year-old life: a Traxxas Nitro Sport. This is a core memory of mine. I still remember how that thing smelled when it was brand new. I ripped on that truck until I was a teenager.
