just put a hardened cb on my savage 25 with aluminum clutch shoes,run great for several tanks of fuel,then melted the center out of the spur gear, no big deal its the original slipper assembly, put the new one on ran good for a couple minutes then did the same thing.couldnt even touch it because it so hot. So my question is what would cause this to happen?
 
your slipper clutch is too loose, the extra slip is causing heat in turn melting teh spur gear
 
What gearing/tires are you running? Running too tall of gearing on a savage causes this problem. Especially if you didn't clean and scuff up the slipper plate and slipper pad on the spur when you put in the new spur. You almost have to tighten the nut on the savage all the way down (completely compress the spring, then a bit more) to keep it from slipping.

It's one of those annoying things HPI should have beefed up a bit. In a way, on their XL, they did beef it up by adding a metal spur. It won't melt... personally, I don't like running metal spurs, but sometimes it's all you can do.
 
I'm running a 17 on the cb and 49 tooth on slipper with stock size tires:\
 
I was running traxxas 3.2" chevrons with 15/47 gearing and it caused it to slip badly with an LRP28S3 engine. I went up (or down, depending on how you look at it) to 15/49 and the slippage dropped to a minimum and has been fairly reliable.

I think the hair taller gearing was too much torque for the slipper to deal with. Gearing a bit lower caused it to not have to work so hard. Would be nice to gear it taller though as it's a bit slow. The engine can easily pull taller gearing. Especially since I have a 3-speed that spreads out the torque better than a two speed. Lets you gear taller since it keeps the engine in it's peak torque range better.
