Last winter I upgraded my motor to a 28. This motor has alot of tq and HP. For some strange reson I keep burning spur gears. I know that the mesh is right becasue I have tryed every method and even let my friends that own rc cars try to mesh it... And it always sounds good (like it should) There are no screws missing so that chassis or motor mount could flex. I know that the clutch isnt getting to hot and melting it becasue I used sandpaper to ruff it up plus I just replaced it with a different bell. Could I be blowing the spur gears from the TQ of the motor? I havnt even ran a full tank and I have allready chewed up 5 spur gears... Do you think it is time to go to metal? becasue This whole spur gear issue is making me super mad...Everytime I ran my savage I have had a problem now they are all fixed and my spur gears turn into perfect circles.
 
loosen it so it will slip instead of strip.. are you melting them or stripping them??
 
Check your slipper clutch, make sure the nut is at least a quarter to a half turn loose from fully tightened.
 
That could be the problem I run mine at 1/8th backed off... I guess they would be called striped... not melted... I just regeared it for more speed, becauase I was conviced that the tq was killing it. now what would be the best way to determine how much it should be backed off? with my electric it is easy to do but how do you do it with a savage? or do you just guess?
 
i run mine tight.. but i dont have a big hp motor.. someone told me once to put the truck against a wall or other solid object and set the slipper to where is starts slipping right befor the truck tryed to climb the wall.. sounds a bit loose to me .. i think hpi says 1/4 turn from tight..
 
Loosen it up.
Place your truck into a wall or curb.
Increase the throttle slowly to 1/2.
Tighten the slipper a little at a time until it "just" trys to climb the wall.
Make small adjustments from there for your style.
 
Before making the adjustment make sure the slipper pad is still good on the spur. Tighten the slipper nut all the way down. Back it off a quarter turn. Now stick your truck in front of a wall, blip the throttle and if the truck tries to climb the wall it's too tight, loosen 1/8 turn until it stops trying to climb.

Hey there... I have a 4.6 that went through six spur gears, in the first quart, chewing teeth off... at my LHS I was told to check my clutch shoes and if they were glazed and wearing prematurely they might be heating up the clutch bell enough to soften the spur gear and then the bell teeth would grind off the spur teeth... I solved it by installing aluminum clutch shoes and roughing up the clutch bell inside... I was sick of buying spur gears also so I installed a Robinson 16/48t steel spur and hardened bell combo. Been through a gallon now without a hitch.
 
you guys advice did me right! but again with the luck I have it wouldnt steer, what happen this time? I blew up my hs645 so now I have some fast digital servo.
 
if you are melting the spurs you need to tighten down the your spur.... all the way i went through this when i installed the picco27 the high hp motors need to have the spur locked down(tighten up all the way) i also agree w/ the cluth bell gettin too hot and melting teeth switching to alum. shoes will help this also where are you melting the spur??? teeth or pad area???? if pad area tighten down spur.... teeth change shoes
