I noticed two days ago that my savage 25 wouldnt hit second gear anymore, so I did as the manual says and adjusted it to change earlier but this didnt help.

The temperatures have been very cold the two days this has happened, could the cold be the reason it wont shift?

I will adjust it to change even earlier just to test it tomorrow, but have a feeling that this is not the way to solve it as the gears changed perfectly for a month before and I havent changed anything since then.

The acceleration and pulling power seems to be the same so I think I am getting close to normal running temperature - just wont shift.

And a side note, I want to get some oil for the gearbox, what kind should I use in there on a stock savage 25?

Thanks.

Dont put oil in your center gear box. That could wreak your 2speed, ask vincemaxx! The reson it wasn't shifting is because your engine wasn't hitting its full rmp (still cold) and now that it shifts even earlyer then what is was before I would bet it is shifting in to second gear right away, before your motor hits anywhere near your max rmp. I would put it back to stock and then check it out again( once it is warm)

I agree w/ dougc, reset the tranny back to factory. And definitely don't put any type of grease or lube in there.

If you really want to run in the cold, here are a couple of things you can do:

---Take some aluminum foil and wrap it around the outside of your cooling head. Leave the top open so you can access your glow plug and read your temps.

---You can also take an old sock and cut a strip (about 3in tall) off the elastic part of the sock. Then simply slide this over the cooling head. Again, leave the top open so you can access your glow plug and read your temps.

Your goal is to reach temps above 190' (thus metal expansion). I think if you try one or both of those suggestions, it will probably help out your shifting.

Thanks, I will use a sock or alu foil on the cooling head tomorrow. And I will set the gearing back to what it was before I adjusted it last time.

If it doesn't work I will be back in need of more help tomorrow. :)

And if you could please tell me why I shouldnt use oil in the GB? When I installed the reverse module I saw it was coated with oil in there.

Well it took a few days before I got to test the sock method.

I ran it for one tank and refuelled then covered the cooling head with a sock - but unfortunately the second gear did still not engage after doing several "high" speed runs after some jumping.

Like I asked earlier is the temperature (couple degrees below zero (celsius)) still the reason for it not shifting, or could this mean something else?

I think the power (acceleration/pulling power) is about the same now as it were before, it just wont shift. :(

If I dont get any suggestions here I will just take everything apart and clean it while looking for defects in the engine/transmission.

If you know for a fact that it's in first gear when it starts out, the problem might be that it hits 2nd almost instantly after only moving about a foot. If you have good, normal acceleration from the start, listen for RPM when running WOT.
If it reaches a good top speed, you might be starting off in second. I've seen both those problems. Since you have changed it to shift earlier, you might be hitting 2nd so fast, you can hardly hear the change. Start with very little throttle, and accelerate slowly, listening for a shift.
You might need to adjust it to shift later.
And, as Blah420 said, they won't shift if they're not tuned right.
A lot of things can get stubborn in cold weather.

Thanks Blah420 and Rolex, I will run it tomorrow and retune it and try to adjust it to shift later.

The temperature tomorrow will be 6 degrees above freezing, so I think conditions will be good for running it.

Rolex: I did something like you said, I stopped it and accelerated slowly to hear the gear change and never heard any shifting (this truck is LOUD so hearing it shift should present no problems). I did did this many times when the engine was really hot, and also went full throttle several times and it got very high RPM (to the point when I didnt dare push it further ie. higher RPM then what I got earlier when it was supposed to shift).

But I will try some tuning and adjusting the gears tomorrow so we will see what happens, thanks for the help guys.

It may actually need repair, depending on how long have you had your original parts in there and how much you bashed your Savage. I remember I had to rebuild my 2nd gear shifter after 2 months of hard core bashing.

I'm glad that I am not the only one who has this shifting problem.

I took everythings out cleaned and put back. I just lube all the bearings that I found in the gear box but not the gears. Will test it later when the weather is getting warmer and I will also test the 3 speeds that I just ordered from rushrc.com too.

SavageRockS: Actually I think I have been bashing it a little hard since I got it one week before christmas. I usually jump most of the time now on the skateboard ramps and at our track.

And what do I do to them exactly? Do I just wash the gears in water and dry them and put them back in there?

I will also have to take the gearbox apart now since we had good temperatures lately and still no second gear. :(

I just wanted to say that I took the entire truck apart, and cleaned everything (opened gearbox and just wiped the gears carefully (no oil/lube!) and put them back in) etc. And now it runs just like it used to, so I am very happy with that.

Just thought I would mention it incase someone does a search and find this thread.
