Looking to buy a Brand New Monster truck. Need Advice

Hi Guys

With so many new Nitro Trucks out there today, its sorta hard to know which ones are the best deal for the buck. Now that the Holidays are over, I'm looking into buying a gift for myself. (A Brand new nitro machine). Which one on the market would you consider as the best to buy and why? onder2:

first, welcome to the forum! that's a pretty tough question to answer as everybody has a different favorite. to help make a choice, though, you should ask yourself what you will mostly be doing with the truck. some trucks are tougher and can hold up to lots of heavy-duty bashing but they aren't quite so fast on a track. then some are really fast on the track, but they don't do the bashing thing so well. a few will do both equally well. right now, i'm a big fan of the revo and the savage, but that's just my opinion. i would suggest a good, long search through the forums to get all the nitty-gritty details about different trucks. if there's good info anywhere, it's here!

First off, what are your intentions? Race or just bash or both? What kind of budget do you have put together and what kind of experience do you have? If your planning on racing or doing any racing I along with many of the others here would recommend a Revo. Just bashing around many will suggest a Savage. If your looking to get into racing and want to compete in Unlimited Monster Truck class get yourself a truggy, the LSP, Jammin and Mugen are all fantastic vehicles. Another thing to consider is what's supported best in your area. Since you in Chicago that's probably not too big of a problem but what does your closest hobby shop keep on hand partswise?

The monster truck market is really flooded right now and there are a lot of choices. The first bit of advice I would suggest is to use a truck that is easy for you to get parts for. If you have a hobby shop close by, scan their inventory to see what they stock. Then read up on some of the threads in the Savage, Revo, T-Maxx and Other Monster Truck forums to see which sounds best to you. Like I said, there are a lot of options and you'll hear all sorts of input from different members. Personally, I have owned a T-Maxx and a Savage. I prefer the Savage over the Maxx.

Like the other guy said. Look for what the local hobby shop carries in spare parts. Try to make sure that they really has them. I bought a truck and everytime something breaks on it the local shop says he has to order it. Even common parts. I think I bought an uncommon truck from him.

I can't offer any opinions but I will say it took me a few weeks just to get it down to only two MT to choose from. It's not as easy as it sounds but there is tons of imformation on just about every RC you can think of out here. I urge you to figure out how much you're willing to spend, what your going to do with it and most important to me was how easy it was going to get parts for weather stock replacements or aftermarket mods. Now my closest LHS is 20 miles away and usualy has to order stuff. This isn't to bad since he usualy doesn't have anything on hand but ebay does. This is perfect for my needs since I already buy tons of other things I need using ebay or the net.

Hi guy and Thanks for the replies.

I plan on mostly Bashing around the yard a lot. There are only a few hobby shops in and around the Chicagoland area that I know of, and was hoping on buying one from someplace like Tower Hobbies. My budget will be manily between $300 - $500, but I want to get a good one..one that can survive even the most brutal bashing..and last!

I'd vote savage if you don't plan to race it.

If you want to race later, I'd go with a revo.

In short the savage is tougher with okay handling, but the revo is pretty tough with great handling. The savage hardly breaks at all, ask beason. He bounces his off of trees and it begs for more.

Thats the top two MT's it came down with me and the main difference between them that I ran across. I choose the Revo since I'm a speed freak but yet it can still take a beaten. Just not as much of a beaten that a Savage can take. Although I bought mine already modded some so hopefully it can handle more than average.

If you want RTR get the Savage 25 LE. You get a 3 speed with that one.

If you want a kit (I suggest getting the kit) get the Savage SS 4.6. You'll need to buy radio equipment separetly, if you get this we can help you out with choice on electrics.

The SS 4.6 is very fast too, with the big .28 engine.

HPI Savage,awesome basher,parts easy to find,a boat load of options from mild to all alu wild.Built tough


Traxxas Revo,great racer,great basher,an all around champ.Good price,not as many option parts as the Savage but plenty still.


Losi Super LST,not much to upgrade out of the box,great racer,good basher.The most expensive but the one that is most race worthy.My fave out of the box


Any of there three does a fantastic job,if its your first truck I would go Revo or Savage.

Take their advice

Starguard, I was like SVOray, it took me a few weeks to wittle it down to two. I listened to the veterans on the site. A lot of the dudes on here are nitro addicts (just check out the no. of posts). Seriously, they know they're s@$t. Everyone has an opinion but I listened to the "lifers" and decided from there. You'll always get other opinions but as you can see, most agree, while a few others have their preferences. I just bought the Savage LE. yesterday! Even the REVO diehards will recommend the Savage for bashing. By spending some cash, you could make it a racer. With the Revo, with spending some cash you could make it a basher. So many decisions, thank god these dudes are here. They can help you with any decision you have to make. Good Luck and let us know what you get.:breakdown

LOL j/k dudes and dudetts It's a good truck from what I keep hearing and maybe a nice one for us new people since it can take a beaten. I may need to get one and see how well it handles my mail box...just to see how much tougher it is compared to a Tmaxx I'm still waiting on parts for that thing and my Revo to get in

I saw in some RC magazine where people would wrap the cooling head in aluminum tape during cold days. This may work to atleast run a few tanks of fuel through her for break ins.
