LiPo question?

Beings that I'm new to the RC world and have jumped in both feet by not only purchasing a new Traxxas Slash 4WD but also a new E-Maxx non brush-less monster truck. I am curious as to what LiPo batteries to get for Slash? And do I need them or just a good 7 cell 4000+ Pack?

All the info I can get is appreciated.

Find out how many cell lipo the esc can handle then go from there, alot of slash drivers I've noticed use Turnigy 5000+ packs.

It all depends on what you're doing with the truck as to whether you need them or not. If you're racing, best to check with your local organization on the rules and regs first. For bashing, there's nothing like the retarded power of 3s lipos. Keep in mind, the battery tray on the Slash 4wd limits what will fit, my Turnigy 3s 5000's won't fit in my buddy's Slash, but my Venom 3s 4000's fit fine. A 5000MAh 2s hard case will fit though. Define what you'll be doing with the truck first, then measure your battery tray and go from there.

The esc handles 3s. 5000 turnigy 3s is what I ran in my and what I have for my dads. Just buy a larger battery mount for it, under $10 I think.
The 3s lipo will make a HUGE difference it power.

3s on most of the Traxxas trucks are insane. The only ones that need more are the CC Mamba Monster.

I upgraded to lipo on my brushed emaxx and there is twice a difference from NiMh. Not as good as brushless, but with twin turnigy 5000 mah batts, it flies!

Run a 2s LIPO in the Slash 4X4. The 3s will strain everything that much more and it's pretty hard to control. 2s RIPS in the 4X4 though.....Plenty of power to bash or race. 3s is just insane power really.

That is a great LiPo for your truck.

Here is a really good hard-case 2s LiPo made by Reedy (Team Associated). It's a 5000mAH and 60c which is as high a discharge rate as I've seen and decent price:

If you ever decide to prove these high discharge rates I suggest you have a fire extinguisher handy.

A 5000mAh 150C pack will deliver, 750A. Which will melt most 1:1 truck jump leads. I think if you actually want to use 750A you will need the equivalent of armored underground electrical utility cable. ie. The stuff that runs round your block to power the houses and... even at that, it's AC current, your LiPo puts out raw DC, which will most likely still melt the neighbourhood ring mains.

So... I would risk saying, "Stop being marketing department fodder and use your noggin."

On a 5000mAh pack anything more than a 40C is - at best - absolutely pointless and at worst - lethally dangerous.

150C is overkill for sure, if the pack can even deliver that much juice all at once. The C rating really is just for peak usage. So say a 5000mah 60C battery is capable of discharging at 300A Peak (5 X 60 = 300A).....your ESC peaks at 150A draw....you will never pull more than 150A, and even if you do....it's only going to be for a short burst.

So I don't think the higher the C rating the more lethally dangerous....it just has more potential to deliver juice faster if requested. Nothing RC related will pull that much juice though. the higher the C Rating, the better the continuous power dump is as well....to a point. Past a certain C Rating won't really matter much in most rigs anyway though. So I wouldn't bother going much higher than 50-60C personally...and even then I'm leaving room for later expansion and upgrades.

LIPOs are dangerous anyway....no matter what the C Rating. So just do your homework and learn how to handle them and all will be well in the end.
