My moms laptop keeps losing wifi through out the day several times randomly. Although nothing else has trouble even when the laptop does. Just started it a week ago.
If you right click and trouble shoot, it fixes it every time but only for a while.

I noticed when this happens it show has full signal, just limited connection?

a few questions first.

What kind of wireless router is and how old is it?
Are there any other devices connected wirelessly?
do you know if they d/c as well?
what kind of wifi? a/b/g/n?
whats your encryption wep? wpa? wpa2?
are you using a dhcp server?
how long does the dhcp server assign leases for? (to find this goto cmd and type ipconfig you will see a listing for dhcp lease time)
when you say disconnect, does it just not browse sites, or does it physically d/c from the router?

i can give abetter answer if you can answer some of these questions. dont worry if you can't aswer all.

What the hell are you talking about? lol sorry, I'm not a computer guy.

Its a Netgear something something. I have a ps3 and a pc connected to it, but I've tried having them off and it still does it. It just has the little yellow triangle pop up on the signal bar down in the right hand corner of the scree.

When I do the trouble shoot, it always says it reset the connection and is now fixed. But in network and sharing shows the connection is good.

sorry trying to probe as much information as I can to give an informed decision. if its windows 7
hit your windows button on your keyboard
goto device manager
then goto network and internet
then network sharing center
then click on manage wireless networks
you will see the network in there make sure you right click on it and goto properties and revela the characters for the encryption key. write that down, then hit ok.
after that delete the entry
try to reconnect to your wifi and type in the key when it asks for it.

if this doesn't work then I would reset the router back to defaults and set it up again. (this is an involved process, and your router should have instructions on how to do it. If not give me the model number and I will find them.) The model number on the router is usually on the bottom around the serial number. if all you can find is a serial number i can probably use that to look it up instead.

I'll try and simplify some of the questions:

Do you have the model # and know the age of the router?

Do you know what kind of WiFi adapter is in the laptop?

Do you have type in a password when you connect to the router by WiFi the first time? If so is it all numbers or a word?

Do you have to manually assign the laptop an address every time you connect?

Does the laptop not browse sites or does it not have signal from the router?

Ok I'll give all that a try tomorrow.

The router is a few years old, dont know the model at the moment. or the wifi adapter thats in the laptop, its an acer laptop if that helps.

I do have the router on a password, which is a word not numbers. and no I dont manually do anything ever, it always just auto connects when you turn the laptop on.

It wont browse when it does this, just says check the connections.

Yeah it has WiFi built in.

How old is the laptop?

Do you have any problems with other wireless devices?

Its like 3 years old, only gets used for email and craigslist. Nothing else is having trouble. I think I have one of those wireless adapter for a computer without wifi somewhere, I'll try to find it and give it a try to see if that helps when I get time.

Sorry if this has been asked but have you tried using the laptop on different wireless routers? Are you getting the same problem? The card might be going. What about going into device manager then uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless card, maybe it needs a driver update. If the card is going, they are really easy to replace. Just make sure you don't have a static charge when you open the computer up.

I have been a computer person since I was in middle school, but routers and networking type stuff has always been a pain to deal with. Even with my current set up the modem and router need to be reset more than once a day because it will stop giving out the wireless signal randomly.

Unfortunatly I've not got access to another router to try. I found the adapter I mentioned, I'll have her try it and maybe that will help.
