RC Driving Style
Hey guys i know this isnt a 4wheeler forum but i just wanted to see if you guys could help me with a problem i have. iv been on 4wheeler forums and they havnt helped me a bit. so here it goes i have a 1986 kawasaki KLF 300cc bayou, i took it through the mud and all getting the rpms up and all, so when i got done i cleaned it off and of cource it cools off and since then i havnt been able to get it started. When i looked in the air box ther was a good portion of water but iv gotten water in there before and with a little throttle and choke it usually starts right up, however this time it doesn't even sound like its trying to start except when it back fires into the carb. Iv got a new spark plug, cleaned out the carburator replaced the fuel filter, and still that same thing.i mean i know its getting fuel cuz I'm giving it so much throttle sometimes that its going down into the air box. I'm really out of guesses and I'm about to take it to a small engines shop or to a good friend who knows alot about engines andwhat not, so before i took it in i was wondering if u guys had any suggestions.

well the only thing i can think of is that it is the ignition epecially if you go through water alot.
 
did you try putting a little gas in the carb, and you changed the spark plug but did you have spark. Another thing that could have happend, which is last case scenerio is that when you get water in your airbox maybe some could have got in the motor, causing it to Sieze or close to it making your cylinders out of round, or pistons. I doubt that is the case but it happens even on cars buy going through really deep puddles. But i would check your spark first, then add a little gas to the carb
 
yeah its prolly the magneto


pull the pulg and stick a screw driver with a rubber handle in the spark plug wire and hold it close to the engine and if it sparks well we know its not that if it does its prolly the magneto
 
Man, my friend has the exact same quad... it has the auto clutch and stuff right? They were having the same problems about a year ago and it was happening way before that... Turns out the valves needed to be adjusted.
 
Your going to have to take your carb off and give it a good cleaning. You sucked up some poop in there. No four wheeler is designed to go thru deep water. Its a good way to ruin a engine. Esp. Polaris's. poop, it rains and theyll have problems starting..lol.. 90% of my dads buisness at his small gas engines shop is Polaris's, and Id say at least half of them are from what your talking about. Anyway, yeah just give the carb a good cleaning, and a new plug and she should fire right up. (and stay out of the deep water..lol
 
oh, another thing, ya wanna check the oil too. Make sure its not milky looking. I'm not sure how deep of water you were in, but if it came back in the exhaust your going to want to change it. it might take a good quart to flush the milky poop out of it, but needs to be done if theres water in it. Good luck and keep us posted.
 
iv done pretty much everything iv cleaned out the carb( took it apart) took the plug out and put it to the cylinder head and it is sparking good, so the only thing I'm thinking is either the valves need adjusted like one of u said or the timing is off, I'm not sure tho I'm kinda tired of the thing now iv been doing everything and all and the poop is still doing the same stuff so ill see what a mecanic says and if i can fix it my self after they diagnose it then ill do that or have them do it but yeah iv checked everything.
 
Next Id do a compression test. Ya might have to call a dealer or google to see what the PSI should be, but thatd be my next step.
 
yeah if the piston and sleeve arent gone now I'm sure they will be some thime in the future so iv called people around the area and all to seeif the boar out and rebuild 4wheeler engines and all but yeah.
 
Dont bore it until ya absolutly have to. If the jug is fine, just put a replacemement one it. Because if you bore it, then blow it up again, it gets harder to do and the jugg gets thinner everytime. I just re-did my top end in my dirtbike and luckily the jugg wasn't scored, so I was able to use a standerd sized piston. But I still dropped a Wiseco performance one in it.
 
yeah i gotcha hey iv been lookin at those pistons and didnt know if they were any good does it run fine for ya and all no problems, cuz they make those boared out for my engine and the regular size and i was just wondering if they were any good, lmk thanks
 
The Wiseco pistons are probably close or are the best in power sports applications. Anyone know about how much it costs to have a 4-stroke cylinder boared? I am thinkin about the trx400ex 440 kit for my quad. Get a hotter cam, new exhaust, re-jet the carb, and a k&n air filter... $$$$$ is the name of the game... why can't everything be free?!!?!
 
IMO wiseco pistons are the best,thats what my familly runs,they do the job.
 
yeah they do when i have to rebuild my dirtbike...thats all that i use..nothin but the best!
 
Yep, I've had Nothing but good luck with it. I could tell the extra punch right off the bat. Well worth the extra money.
