Gang,

So I'm going to be picking up a buggy very soon. As I already have the electronics (Futaba 3pm, receiver) I wanted to see where to get one with everything except the radio/receiver but it seems the terms used vary from place to place. Does anyone know what I should be looking for? RTR's would mean yet another damned radio I'll never use, Rolling chassis seems to indicate I'd need to pick up an engine, and RTM's vary on what is included.

I already plan on replacing any stock servos with higher-end but if there's a place I can just say "gimme this model with everything except the radio/reciver" to reduce costs etc that would be great.

RTM?

IMO, never EVER go for a used RTR. Most of the time the engines are in bad conditions. Also, RTR are always the ones that are made with the lower parts (Plastic instead of metal, etc.). I'd go for a rolling chassis since you already have the radio parts. You will just need a engine, and trust me, you should always get a new engine.

Buying a used roller is sometimes ok depending on what the rig started out as. Over the past 4 years, I've bought two decent 1/8 buggy rollers (no engine/clutch/flywheel or electronics), both around $100-$150 shipped off of forum members.

So, since you have your electronics, just hit ebay or the forums looking for a roller, then ask questions about what's included so you know what to order to get it going. A decent basher engine is the XTM24.7. Can be found on ebay for $100, I paid $90 for my last one. Good running little engine. Not a race engine by any means, but plenty of power to shoot a buggy around.

You can check out my vids to see mine. I paid $150 for the roller shipped, OFNA Jammin XB. Great little rig. I put an XTM 24.7 in it with my electronics. I also cleaned out the center diff and put 50K in it. I'm a basher. I want 4wd pretty much always. ;)

Anyway, I can PM you my vids so you can see what a $100 engine does in a buggy. That is, if money is your primary concern.

RTM=Ready to Modify.

I should have specified I'm looking to buy new, not used.

Amoeba,

I just got the Losi 8ight 2.0. Its a race roller.. I love it. I put a V-spec on it and DX3R radio and its was ready to go. Very well built and handles well. I guess I'm partial to Losi. Any questions just ask.

Tim

Thanks for the reply Tim. I know I can pick up a roller but most rollers are more race-oriented setups without engines and the combined cost puts them above my alloted budget. What I'd really like to find is an RTR minus the radio & servos (new) but not sure what search terms or models people would point to.

i dont think there is such a thing, ths hpi kits (savage i know of) comes iwth servos and engine but nothing else. I would go with a decent kit, or like stated get the rtr and sell the radio. they hyper 7 is a very nice buggy and not very expensive. i have never messed with the hyper 8 but if its better then the 7 buy it.

Thanks Beason. I may just have to bite the bullet and go with a rolling chassis and pick up an engine. I'm wanting to stay away from RTR's if possible simply to avoid having to upgrade or hop-up the cheaper parts most RTR's tend to use to keep costs down.

i had the hyper 7 pcr edition and it was a beast. it had quite a few factory hoppups but i got it used so I'm not sure about the mill and stuff.
