So I decided to reinstall the 16t pinion in my pede xl5. I had the 18t installed, and thought that the lower temps from using the 16t would be better off for the motor. However since going back down to the 16t, the temps seem to be a bit higher than before. Now I dont have a temp gauge, i am using my finger to gauge the temps.

I am kind of confused as to why the motor temps are higher with the 16t. When I had it installed before, the temps were pretty reasonable. I could hold my finger on the motor longer.....you know what I mean?

Any ideas? I have checked that there is not any binding in the wheels, and everything sounds and seems happy in the diff. The rear wheels spin really nicely by hand.

lower gearing might allow for higher rpm = more heat maybe not for sure tho just my 2 cents

Well, I am running 16/90 in the pede right now, which is supposed to be good for all around grass/dirt/street bashing and running. The lower gearing should be good for higher torque yet slower speed. That is why Traxxas supplies you with the 23t and the 19t pinion gears. the 23t is good for high speed street runs only and that is why you should gear down for other types of running such as grass and dirt. I did have the 16t installed, and it did make a big difference with heat....and this time around seems to be abit different.

One day I will. But for now, any other suggestions? How hot is too hot when you are using the touch method?

Use a drop of water or spit on finger and if it sizzles immediately its too hot.

I actually thought about mounting a small cooling fan on the roll bar in front of the head on my revo and using the third channel on receiver to remotely activate it. Like a esc fan or something.

Actually Integy makes a cooling fan mounted on top of cooling fins that all mounts onto the can of the Titan. I can hold my finger on the can for about 3 or 4 seconds after running it hard.

should be fine if you can hold it on there that long, temp gun would help tremendously.

hard to judge temps by touch cuz I know a motor that is running at 138F isnt something I want to hold on to very long but isnt in the "danger zone" if you will. The only way to know for sure if your engine temps are really hotter is with a heat gun doing comparisons and the only reason you motor would get hotter by lowering your pinion tooth count is if something else is causing extra friction in the driveline somewhere.

I will try to loosen the gear mesh a hair and see if that makes a difference too. Whenever I set the mesh, I am always sure to set it by backing the motor off of the spur so that I can hear the "click" between the gears.
