RC Driving Style
i got a savage x f4.1 which recently wont tick over at all. and keeps cutting out in about 30 secs of driving it. iam quite new to nitro so my tuning is not great, but it still does it on the factory settings. i havent touched the low speed needle yet as i was told not to. but its seem its the only thing i havent tried. any ideas would be great!

Sometimes it could be the temperature outside. Some cars don't like to run on cold days. Is your engine stalling? If it is, check your fuel tank, check if fuel lines, air filter, or muffler is clogged, check if the carburettor is adjusted properly, or if the engine is overheated.

Factory settings aren't always right either. At least not directly from the factory. You may want to find out what "factory" settings are, then adjust your needles to make sure that's where they are.

I've had engines come new out of the box with the needles screwed all the way in... from the factory. ;)

yeah because it was working fine after my mate tuned it for me then started it the next day and it was crap, not ticking over and keep cutting out. yet i never touched anything. its got a polished pipe on it from the previous owner, should i take that off and put the factory one back on.

so he tuned it. then it worked fine. then next day it didnt run, right?

it may be reasonable to suspect it may have been overly too lean and may have damaged to piston/sleeve

settings shouldnt be that narrow-ranged. if you get a working setting, it should generally work for the next time you start, unless conditions are really, really that different.

reset needle settings and start from the last usable/factory settings. if you still can't get it working, i would suspect the piston/sleeve.

if the piston/sleeve is damaged does that mean new engine or can it be fixed. although i dont think it is too lean coz there is always a resonable amount of smoke. do you think a new glow plug, little tweek on the lsn and putting the old pipe on would be worth a go? i can't help thinking its something simple to fix but i can't see it coz iam quite new to nitro.

It may have been running on the lean side, therefore the plug may have gotten too hot and is now cooked or damaged.

Try a new glow plug with a fully charged igniter.

Have you verified the Idle? Is is staying open about 1mm during idle? How does the idle sound? Rich or lean? Rich will be a slow idle and lean will be a fast higher RPM idle.

First thing, pull your glow plug and look at it. It will tell you if you ran too lean, if that is the case the little filament will be whitish and dull and may be broken or warped. If it is, then look at the top of the piston to see if it has been damaged, and take the header off and look in the exhaust port at the side of the piston for any unusual wear or damage. You probably just need to change the glow plug, and start over at your factory settings, but it is good to inspect it just in case.

check yor idle and screw it inwards to raise the idle speed.
you also may want to let it idle a bit longer to let the engine heat up a bit before you go rushing off.

my engine doesn't have a idle screw only the lsn and hsn. how else can i raise the idle?

iam quite sure it only has 2 screws. I've left it at work so i can't check now.but I've only seen the high speed needle and the low speed needle.

The Green Arrow Shows the Idle Set Screw. You may have just missed it since its on the backside of the carb.

ah yeah sorry you were right i found the little bugger. i couldnt get it started today coz me roto start ran out of charge so will give it a go tomorrow with the new glow plugs which should turn up today. thanks for your help jon2

just to let you know i got it going today, gave the idle screw a little tweek. and the results were awesome!! thats all it needed. i got through 1 1/2 tanks today without it cutting out! iam over the moon! although my boss wasn't happy coz i over ran my lunch break ha ha.

Good to hear. Just remember that little adjustments on these little glow engines go a LOOOOOONNNGGG WAY. Use 1/12 or "one hour" increments.
